WASHINGTON "INSIDERS" THINK SVINICKI WILL BE APPROVED FOR 2ND TERM AT NRC...

YOUR ACTIONS WILL PROVE THEM WRONG

April 26, 2012

Dear Friends,

The National Journal today published a short piece in which a survey of its Washington "insiders" predict that Kristine Svinicki will be confirmed by the Senate for a second term at the NRC. (On the good news side, they also predict the Keystone XL pipeline will go down again...).

We think these "insiders" are wrong on Svinicki, and that there is an excellent chance she won't be confirmed--and she shouldn't be. There is still, in fact, a chance that President Obama will decide not to renominate her. He still hasn't formally done so. After all, her support comes from the nuclear industry and Senate Republicans; Senate Democrats, including Majority Leader Harry Reid, are lining up to oppose her.

Which makes your actions all the more important. More than 10,000 letters have gone in to the Senate and President Obama so far, and that's great. That kind of pressure makes a difference. If you haven't sent your letter in yet, please do so now!

And, a reminder to all organizations: we also will be submitting an organizational sign-on letter to Sens. Boxer and Inhofe (chair and ranking member of the Senate Environment Committee, which must first approve any NRC nomination) and President Obama. An updated draft of the letter can be found here, including those organizations that have signed on so far. If your organization is not yet on this letter, please send your name, title, organization, city and state to [email protected] by 9 am eastern time, Monday, April 30, 2012. We will be submitting the letter later that day. If your organization already has signed, please check to make sure you are listed properly and all your information is there.

Finally, today is the 26th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe. Whatever else you are doing today, we hope you'll take time for a moment of silence for the untold number of past, present and future victims of that disaster.

Thanks for all you do!
