BREAKING NEWS:
U.S. Congress passes 28th Amendment to the Constitution, ending corporate personhood and establishing strict campaign finance laws for all federal elections.
Effective immediately, the new amendment bans for-profit corporations, limited liability companies, political action committees (PACs), Super PACs, unions, and other entities from flooding the electoral process with unlimited financial contributions.
PACs such as Citizen's United and Restore Our Future are reacting with shock and anger. Hours after the amendment passed, Citizen's United issued a statement saying, "While we understand the overwhelming desire of the people of the United States to regain control of their government, we believe the 28th Amendment contradicts the right to free speech guaranteed by the 1st Amendment. We continue to firmly believe that the ability to influence elections with vast sums of money is the right and responsibility of the 1%. Their financial prowess unambiguously proves their superior intelligence, regardless of the lawfulness of their actions or any moral considerations. On this unfortunate day we are recommitting to exercising our right to free speech. We will find new means of assuring that Wall Street Banks, multi-national corporations and the super wealthy take this country back from the dangerous precipice of mob-rule."
In another unprecedented move, the 5 Supreme Court justices who voted for the controversial Citizen's United decision have begun a hunger-strike on the steps of the Supreme Court, saying they are refusing all caviar, champagne and foie gras until Congress passes a 29th Amendment nullifying the 28 Amendment.
The text of the 28th Amendment to the Constitution reads:
Section 1
The rights protected by the Constitution of the United States are the rights of natural persons only.
Artificial entities, such as corporations, limited liability companies, and other entities, established by the laws of any State, the United States, or any foreign state shall have no rights under this Constitution and are subject to regulation by the People, through Federal, State, or local law.
The privileges of artificial entities shall be determined by the People, through Federal, State, or local law, and shall not be construed to be inherent or inalienable.
Section 2
Federal, State and local government shall regulate, limit, or prohibit contributions and expenditures, including a candidate’s own contributions and expenditures, for the purpose of influencing in any way the election of any candidate for public office or any ballot measure.
Federal, State and local government shall require that any permissible contributions and expenditures be publicly disclosed.
The judiciary shall not construe the spending of money to influence elections to be speech under the First Amendment.
Section 3
Nothing contained in this amendment shall be construed to abridge the freedom of the press.
Looking forward to the day (not April 1) this becomes reality?
