It would be better to ban this atrocious technique entirely, but in the meantime...
=========
Fracking - or hydraulic fracturing - is widespread in California, and the state agency responsible for regulating oil and gas drilling has long turned a blind eye to it.

That's why we need your help today. Californians have the right to know the facts about fracking in our state, but the state Department of Oil and Gas isn't doing enough. That's why the Senate is considering Assembly bill AB 591, introduced by Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont).

This critical right-to-know legislation will finally require state officials to find out where fracking is occuring and what chemicals drillers are using. The Assembly has already passed it. Make sure the Senate and Governor Brown take action! Sign EWG Action Fund's petition to the governor and the legislature today!

A new EWG investigation has found that oil and gas companies have been fracking since 1953 in at least six California counties. But as recently as February of this year, the state Department of Oil and Gas was insisting that drillers rarely use the process in California. There are no regulations to monitor, track or regulate fracking in any way, and the Department of Oil and Gas has no intention of writing any.

Fracking injects a mix of water, sand and chemicals into underground rock formations under extremely high pressure in order to free trapped deposits of oil and gas. Fracking has been associated with water contamination and property damage across the nation, from Pennsylvania to Wyoming. In one incident that polluted a Colorado creek, nearby groundwater was still contaminated with benzene six years later.

AB 591 will finally require the state to track where fracking is taking place and require drilling companies to disclose how much water they are using, where it's coming from, what chemicals they are using and in what quantities. This is common sense, right-to-know legislation. The Assembly has already taken action, so let's make sure the Senate and Governor Brown do, too. Sign our petition today!

Thank you for your support. You have the right to know.
