Google: Don't Sponsor Bigotry (https://www.change.org/petitions/google-dont-sponsor-bigotry)
The "letter" reads:
Google: Don't be evil
Dear Larry Page and Eric Schmidt,
I'm shocked and disappointed that Google is a primary sponsor of a conference that will give a platform to anti-gay and white nationalist bigots. I'm calling on you to unequivocally repudiate these poisonous viewpoints and donate an equal sum of money to causes that promote tolerance.
This year's Conservative Political Action Conference will feature a panel called "The Failure of Multiculturalism" that includes Peter Brimelow, founder of a white nationalist website named VDARE, and white nationalist leader Bob Vandevoort.
VDARE has published articles claiming that black Americans have a lower IQ than whites, that Jews are partly to blame for "weakening America’s historic white majority," and that America is a fundamentally white country.
But it doesn't stop with VDARE. Bob Vandevoort is a former leader of a midwestern white nationalist group with close ties to the "pro-white" Council of Conservative Citizens.
CPAC is also giving a stage to anti-gay bigot Tony Perkins, leader of the Family Research Council, which has been named a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The FRC has repeatedly equated LGBT-identified people with pedophiles and rabidly fights against equality for gay people. Perkins has said that gay people lead a "death-style" and not a lifestyle.
To be clear, this is not about politics -- it's about common decency. Whether Google gives money to conservative causes or liberal causes is irrelevant. What matters is that one of the world's largest businesses -- one with an unofficial motto of "Don't be evil" -- not support hatred.
It is essential that Google publicly reject these views, but that is not enough. To demonstrate its commitment to equality, Google must also publicly pledge to donate $20,000 to causes that promote tolerance and equality.
