This is a message from former elections administrator Eve Roberson. Is anyone available to observe the 1% recount of the primary election TODAY? It's happening from 9 - 5 at the registrar of voters office, 435 Fiscal Drive, Santa Rosa.

I saw a notice posted on the door at the Register of Voters office that the canvass (counting of 1% of ballots cast in the 6/6 election) begins there tomorrow morning (Fri. June 9) at 9am and continues until 5pm and continues next week until completed. I do not know which of RoV staff will be doing it. I am still working in the RoV office or I would attend as an observer myself. It is open to the public and I try to notify interested people because it needs to be observed. Last election no one responded nor attended, unfortunately but I am sending them copies of this again this year in hopes someone can attend.

I asked Janice Atkinson (RoV) today how the precincts were selected and she said randomly. I asked if absentee votes are recorded by precinct so that accurate numbers for voting precincts would be available. She said they are not but that she does pick some absentee ballots to be part of the canvass but they are counted by the optical scanner not hand count like the official canvass. (Note: They were originally counted by the scanner, so I don't know how this is an audit of the original vote however.)

Registrar of Voters Janice Atkinson has said that there is no way to know how many of the absentee votes left to be counted are Democrats and that no final figures will be issued until the final canvass of the vote is completed (probably next week?). Janice will also know how provisional ballots are being handled.

Best regards, Eve
