Don't Bite My Dog, Ma
by Stephen D. Gross
(How many canines can YOU find in the below?)

I setter Irish buns down
A little husky but so sharp, eh?
The sky was blue, tic'd with black
And tan were the West Highland hills
Beyond the Great Pyrenees
lay our new found land
Keys hunted forever lost
The Skipper keyed his wheel
our ship rode easy on the ridge
back of icy Labrador
whipp'd by the grey hounding winds
we embraced the shivering mast
stiff from the bitchin' freeze
builds a cairn upon our spirit
Nor can sunlight ever spring her
Instead Spits flames of frost and numbs the heart
So lucky we were beset with ardor
We'd often pinch her and beg all
her favors, chase a peek
at her beauty in Boston or Clumber
Then watch King Charles box her
and sealed like ham
in her gourd she'll rot while
her bloody hounds course
after fox, Norwegian elk and Scottish deer
undeterred six feet above her
Use your gold and retrieve her
lying deep within the pit
Bulls and coyotes endure close
by border coal lies waiting
to warm mariners and sad shepherds
Belgian and German who carry blues
within their breasts and crossing the span,
yell about eating chow in Lhasa
Wolfing pudding in Yorkshire
or was it Peking eased their hunger so well?
Serenely mellow, mutely laughing
bathing by moonlight
In dreamtime's silky pool I drift
in canid dreams tonight...
