There is much misunderstanding about why people migrate to the US. I posted on the Events & Classes section of WaccoBB, information about a film that will be shown tomorrow evening at the Peace & Justice Center. This is an opportunity to learn about people from Latin America who tell of their personal experience and why they came to the US. There will be discussion with one of the film makers and an update from the Committee for Immigrant Rights of Sonoma County.
See details at WaccoBB Events & Classes. Title of the thread is: Thurs July 21 - Film "Why We Come / Por Que Venimos"
At the Peace & Justice Center, 467 Sebastopol Ave, Santa Rosa (off Santa Rosa Ave, just south of Juilliard Park)

Sorry I didn't make it to this (even though it's so close to where I live). That 7:00 o'clock hour is the time i like to be home in transition (dinner, etc). I'm sure it was great. I hope it was well attended!

you can get this movie on netflix--a really worthwhile (and not excruciating) hour and a half or so ("Why We Come"). It lets us follow some real people for a long time, get to know them, and come to our own conclusions about immigration.

I looked and don't see that Netflix has this film. I have a copy. It's 45 min of engaging testimonials and scenes of conditions in Mexico, the border and people still struggling to survive here in the US. If you get a number of folks to view it I would gladly bring it and possible have one of the film makers come also.

Why We Come was produced in Marin at the Community Media Center of Marin which makes quality public access television. They sell the dvd's for $10.00 and are ready and willing to go anywhere to show it. One or more producers will show up if you can gather a small or large group together for the showing.
Email Jimmy at
[email protected] for information or to get a copy.
We had a fantastic showing here in Pt. Reyes a few months ago. The film and the people are truly inspiring!

I wonder if they've shown it at the Santa Rosa Community Access Channel? ( you can only get it if you have Comcast, and if you live in Santa Rosa...)

Hi all, huge apologies for scrambling titles on you. I said "Why We Come" was on Netflix, but of course it isn't. The one I saw on the same subject that DOES follow kids and adults making their way north from Guatemala by train is "Which Way Home"...and I"m not even dyslexic! Here's the link to it on Netflix:

I'm making arrangements with the Community Media Center to have it shown. Will post date, time and channel, when I have the details.
