Hi, Wacconics. At the risk of getting into a not-very-serious topic...l'll do it. I have a pretty undistinguised bunch of silver coins, mostly foreign, that I'd love to turn into a little extra cash. Where's the best place to do that? I know there was a discussion about this a while back on Wacco, but I don't remember what it said. This is really no big deal, just pocket change, really, but it'd be nice to do as well as I can with it.
Thanks.

My wife did quite a bit of research and found that eBay tends to follow the market rather closely, and that prices there pretty accurately reflect the open market. With that said, she's sold several of our silver coins, proof coin collection sets, and foreign silver coins.

Hi, Im. Thanks for your answer. Actually, I greatly doubt that any of these coins are really worth taking on the eBay journey. Ideally, I'd like to find a dealer locally who will pay me an honest price for the silver based on weight, and won't try to undercut me if one or another of these coins is much more valuable than the silver weight. I've thought about Coddingtown Coin, with whom I've done a little past business, and also the S.R. Coin Exchange and Michael & Co., on Mark West Springs Road. I'm kind of like Diogenes from the storybooks, looking for an honest person and carrying around a sack of silver rather than a lantern.

Hi, again, to Marty. To all out there - Marty has put together a wonderful primer of how to sell (and, by extension, buy) stuff on eBay. If you've been contemplating doing that, what he wrote to me is a great place to start.

Marty, I've been an eBay buyer/seller, though not for quite a few years, and I know things have changed. When I was active, my approval rating was a bit over 1000, which was a pretty fair record. Nowadays, I think, it's no big deal. I never sold coins on eBay - mostly concentrated on Southwest and Mexican silver jewelry, other Native American items and what in the trade is called "smalls." I worked at Tribal Beginnings, the American Indian shop in Sebastopol, for a few years, and sold at the Marin Flea during its last four years. I'm completely out of all that now, though.

Encouraged by your communication, I took a quick look back through this bunch of coins. I was actually a coin collector for many years (a LONG time ago). Honestly, I didn't see a single coin that I thought was likely to be worth more than weight value, and I'm pretty sure that some of those are not 90% silver. If I had items that I thought had genuine value as collectibles, I might take a deep breath and go the eBay route, but I just don't think it's worth it. But, again, many thanks for your advice.

Meanwhile, does anyone out there particularly like or dislike one or another of the Sonoma County shops that buy silver and/or coins? I've heard good things about Pacific Precious Metals in Mill Valley, but it's a long way to go to get a few bucks more for this stuff.

What I wish I had was the first coin collection I sold (in about 1959) or the second one (sold in about 1975). But I could whine forever about all the stuff I've sold over the years for less than it became worth. Of course, I'd have to gloat some more about the fabulous prices I occasionally got for stuff.

Thanks, everyone.

I am in Petaluma, I am doing a little bit of buying scrap silver. I don't buy things for coin value, so junk coins are fine by me, as are weighted silver and anything stamped Sterling.

What I do is test and then buy scrap silver, save it all up and then resale it in a big lot.

My name is Justin Hunter, My number is 707-479-1062. I will show you how my silver testing works, and show you how I determine my offer price that is fair.
