Here's an excerpt from Rania Khalek's interesting (and short) article about Michigan's slow motion derailment. I find it astonishing:
"In March, (Michigan Governor) Snyder signed a law (https://www.legislature.mi.gov/%28S%28stwb4255luxiis555dljyajf%29%29/mileg.aspx?page=getobject&objectname=mcl-Act-4-of-2011) granting state-appointed emergency financial managers (EFM) the ability to fire local elected officials, break teachers’ and public workers’ contracts, seize and sell assets, and eliminate services, entire cities or school districts, all without any public input. He claims these dictatorial restructuring powers will keep Michigan communities out of bankruptcy."
