I've been having fun and winning small prizes entering the Washington Post's weekly Style Invitational contests. The Empress, who runs those contests, has informed me that the entries I email her have a problem that she hasn't seen from any of the other hundreds of entrants: When she converts my email into a word document, any quotation marks I've used turn into little superscript 1s and 2s! Actually, I've noticed that before; when my Yahoo-group Wacco posts show up in my inbox the same thing has happened--quotation marks turning into superscript 1s and 2s. Do any of you computer wizards know what I can do about this? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Are you using a Windows or Mac computer? Are you using a program on your computer for email or doing it online (just using your browser)? Who provides your email service?

If you were to write your messages using a text editor, then copy and paste them to an on-line email service like Gmail (Google's e-mail service), you shouldn't have this problem. You could also just write them in Gmail, though it's not the greatest user interface.

Are you using a Windows or Mac computer?

An iMac (700 MHz PowerPC G4).

Are you using a program on your computer for email or doing it online (just using your browser)?

Using Entourage.

Who provides your email service?

I've just switched from Earthlink to Sonic. I'm not actually sure this problem still continues with my new Sonic account. Time will tell.

If you were to write your messages using a text editor, then copy and paste them to an on-line email service like Gmail (Google's e-mail service), you shouldn't have this problem.

Hopefully there's some way I can avoid going through this hassle.

You could also just write them in Gmail, though it's not the greatest user interface.

I'm kinda attached to Entourage, since my Entourage program is a de facto archive, containing thousands of my old emails, some of which I have occasion to dig up from time to time.

Thanks for your suggestions, Clint.

A quick search seems to turn up that the funny characters produced using Entourage may be the result of having the message format set to html rather than plain text. In html, it may use characters (such as curved quotes) that some Windows-based programs misinterpret. This page tells how to set Entourage to send your current message - or all messages - as plain text:

If this doesn't seem to work on your version of Entourage, perhaps there's someone out there familiar with the program who could help.
