Marin-based # 1 Ambient Star and Top Hawaii Pop Star
Go Back to Their Roots with Americana Nouveau “Songs to Live By”

3/9 Setchko & Meese concert raises funds for CD & celebrates Setchko’s birthday with intimate acoustic music fostering “positive experiences within”

I’ve opened up my heart I’ve opened up my mind
I’ve opened up my pocketbook from time to time
I ask a lot of questions Read so many books
But going within is the best place to look

And softly Stillness speaks
Softly Stillness teaches me

- From “Stillness” by Bodhi Setchko (will be performed 3/9)

Marin’s Brazilian Vocal Legend Jose Neto praises “Warm, open-hearted songs”

San Geronimo – A celebratory musical career reunion for a #1 ambient music star and a top Hawaii pop star will be both profound and boisterous, celebrating the one year anniversary of acoustic duo Setchko & Meese and the “annual birthday bash” for long-time Marin musician Bodhi Setchko.

Accomplished multi-genre, multi-instrumentalists Bodhi Setchko have been playing together on and off for 20 years. Setchko garnered recording deals and critically-acclaimed albums both as a singer-songwriter in the 70’s and later as an influential force in the new age/ambient music movement (with new age band Crystal Wind) leading up to his 2006 #1 Hit (Trans Ukraine) on the international ambient charts. Meese has made a splash from the East Coast to Hawaii opening for acts like Elton John, The Go-Gos & Toots and the Maytals. He too has a strong affinity for ambient music as a member of notable Marin-based purveyors of “Music to Feel”, Harmonic Healers.

But together they are doing something refreshingly different. “I’m getting back to the roots of my original musical taste and earliest musical experiences,” says Meese. “Just the simplicity of two voices and two instruments and what magic they can make.” For this concert Meese will primarily play guitar and bass and Setchko guitar, and they will be playing Setchko’s originals and a few selected covers. Fans can look forward to Meese’s originals in the future.

This concert is the beginning of big things for the duo whose plans include national touring and recording – in fact this event doubles as a fundraiser for production funds for their first CD as a duo, and partial proceeds will ALSO support the San Geronimo Valley Community Center Food Bank and other programs. Despite the big plans, in Setchko and Meese both artists eschew the traditional performer personas in favor of a more intimate and authentic presence.

Regardless of genre or band, both musicians are after changing the way we feel as listeners, and a deeper engagement with the audience. “Positive messages are at the heart of the music of Setchko and Meese,” says Setchko, “Our purpose is for people to have a deep feeling of hope and well-being when they hear or sing along with our music. We want them to say ‘I like what I’m saying to myself’.”

Meese agrees, “We have seen our audiences transformed through what they create in their imaginations in response to the music. People tell us tell us they leave a concert feeling revitalized or renewed.” It’s no surprise that Acclaimed local guitarist Jose Neto has praised them for “Warm, open-hearted songs” and fan raves employ terms like “magical”, “soulful” and “fresh”.

In a sense a Setchko and Meese concert has the intimacy of a spiritual gathering – and the music is meant to affirm, embrace and inspire audience members rather than simply to entertain them. This is hardly surprising given Setchko’s 8 year tenure as music director for Marin’s Golden Gate Center for Spiritual Living and you can see it (on Youtube) in their soulful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” which they performed at last year’s birthday concert to a thunderous reaction.

The festive March 9th event for Setchko and Meese will serve as a music career reunion in the second half of the show, featuring some of the best musicians that Bodhi and Stephen have played with over the including Joyus Lippincott (Saxophone), Robert Powell (Pedal Steel, Guitar), Mika Scott (Percussion) and Robin Zickel (Drums). Among the artists in the evening’s band members have performed with Crystal Wind, Rhythm Matrix, Jazz Iguanas, Jimmy Dylan Band, Kyle Alden Band, Shana Morrison Band and others.

The evening also continues a 15 year tradition (and intermittently back to the 70’s) of packed rooms celebrating Bodhi Setchko’s birthday. Setchko has traditionally “told the story of my life in song.” This year he says, “The songs reflect my evolution with more experienced, deeper music and more of a focus on the positive message that is so core to Setchko and Meese”. This year, our theme is ‘Songs to live by’, a reflection of how we live our lives as more experienced artists. It’s a way to combine our personal and professional lives to achieve a real intimacy with our audience-community.”
