The year of the Rabbit, which officially began on Feb 3., started a little early in Rohnert Park.
On Saturday, Jan. 29, a couple turned in 20 (yes, that says twenty!) “stray” rabbits they had just found. Sorry if I sound skeptical but I know how difficult it can be to catch just my one pet bunny when he is enjoying himself outside. And I know it can take professionals in rabbit rescue weeks to catch a group of free-roaming rabbits once they’ve been located. Whether stray or not, clearly someone had gotten in over their head with their pets. You know the jokes about reproducing like rabbits? It’s true! In any case, our shelter has 20 more bunny residents now than we did last week.

The good part is that the rabbits for the most part were in good shape and healthy. They obviously hadn’t been on their own for very long. Mixed in the group were 12 babies, from at least two separate litters if not more. They are all tame and really quite nice. A few are of identifiable breeds, a couple of Rexes, a Silver Martin, a couple of English Spots but the rest are probably what we call an American Rabbit – in other words a mix.

So I guess having a shelter full of bunnies is an appropriate way to kick off the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. According to one website “the rabbit is considered a lucky sign.Unlike Western astrology, with its ever-shifting, daily horoscopes, those born under the sign of the rabbit are said to be kind, wise, gentle, considerate and, fashionable (https://email.rpcity.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https://www.stanssewingsupplies.com/catalogs/store.asp?pid=253080).” I wonder if those attributes would apply to those who adopt a rabbit. I would definitely consider those people kind, wise and having a rabbit for a pet is definitely on the cutting edge of fashion! Want to be part of this elite group?

We actually celebrate the rabbit on a monthly basis with our regular “Meet the Bunny” program the second Saturday of each month. We set up our adoptable bunnies in exercise pens for easy viewing. Our knowledgeable Bunny Hugger volunteers are on hand to answer care questions and the public can bring their rabbits in for free nail trims and handling tips. There’s also a bunny boutique set up with lots of fresh hay, toys, and supplies available for sale. All proceeds from our boutique directly goes back to assist the shelter with the care of their small animals - it isn’t cheap to feed and care for 20-plus rabbits!

Coincidentally, our Bunny Day this month is this Saturday, Feb. 12 and coincides with our Valentine Cat Adoption event and Bake Sale. To encourage adoptions we are offering a one day only special – a FREE bunny starter kit (litter box, water bottle, carpet square, bag of food, and more), valued at $40, with each adoption. We will have plenty of adoptable rabbits available including some of the newcomers. Nothing is cuter than a baby bunny so you will definitely want to come by Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and meet a few of these darlings. Who knows, you may be smitten and want to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit by making one a member of your family!
