Based upon the single fact that the new system offers RSS feeds, I am fully in support of moving EVERYTHING to WaccoBB.net.

BC

Yahoo! Groups already provides RSS (see https://groups.yahoo.com/group/wacco-bb/)

Yes, I am using RSS for my subscription to wacco-bb (and sevral other wacco replacement lists that have sprung up the past few weeks.) But the RSS option was not available under the old waccobb. A dynamic RSS search feature like Craigslist would be a valuable addition to WaccoBB.net (and something that will not be available on the other wacco lists served by Yahoo.)

Actually it was, but Barry didn't enable it. I requested that he do so on June 23rd:

Please enable the RSS Feed option for
WaccoBB like the Jazz Guitar group has:

https://e.my.yahoo.com/config/cstore?.opt=content&.done=http%3a//launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/jazz_guitar/&.url=http%3a//rss.groups.yahoo.com/group/jazz_guitar/rss

Thank you,

On June 27th, Barry enabled it.

I had also requested that the service be activated on April 13, but nothing came of it. I had no idea that it had been turned on before the list finally went down.

Is the RSS feed on this site working yet??
If so, where is it?
RSS had been brought up here 5 days ago

p.s. I just did a search for "RSS" and nothing came back (I had to find the above post by searching through my email) - is the search on this site not working??

Thanks! :-)

For some reason, I'm only able to get it to work in Mozilla using infoRSS https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=361

In Firefox for the Mac, it's not recognizing the feed. However, the RSS for Yahoo! Groups works fine as well as for vBulletin (the makers of this software) https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/
where an orange icon for RSS feeds is displayed at the bottom right:
https://img133.imageshack.us/img133/5127/rssicon6ep.jpg (https://imageshack.us)
This subscribe to RSS icon is missing using your link. Any ideas?

Thanks again,

For the RSS link to show up in the bottom status bar, the html page needs to contain a line in the header like the one below:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="CNN - Top Stories [RSS]" href="https://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss">

For sites that do not have this line incorporated, one needs to create a "Live Bookmark" in Firefox from a site (such as CNN) that does have this option. Then right-click/control-click the resultant folder and select Properties. This will allow you to change the name and RSS feed location.

Hopefully, the Mozilla team will be making this process more intuitive in upcoming releases. NetNewsWire (and several other newsreaders) allow one to just create a link and paste the feed address right into it.

Thanks! :-)

Thanks for the info. Looks like the most practical fix is for Barry to simply modify his code to do as you suggest in the above.

Perhaps a line like this?

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="WaccoBB.net RSS Feed" href="external.php?type=RSS" />

Thanks,

Looks like the RSS feed is set currently to only offer new posts, but not replies. Can you please enable it to feed the replies as well? I don't have that option. It may be addressed by a patch that I can install, but again, that's not at the top of my list. At least the RSS feed for new posts is working which would give you roughly what the Yahoogroup would give you (where there are no replies).

Based upon the vBulletin documentation, it looks like the only option is to turn RSS on/off, but not to alter the way it functions.

You can read about RSS here https://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html

As for Safari and RSS, the answer is "yes" (see https://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/)

Bob,

If you change your href from a relative link to an absolute link, the live bookmark creates itself correctly from the start.

Try:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="WaccoBB.net RSS Feed" href="https://www.waccobb.net/forums/external.php?type=rss" />

Instead of just:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="WaccoBB.net RSS Feed" href="external.php?type=RSS" />

If this was placed in the header of each WaccoBB page as it was served, the RSS icon would show up in newsreaders automatically.

Apple incorporated RSS into Safari in OS X 10.4 (Tiger), but not under OS X 10.3 (Jaguar).

Another good source of RSS information at at Wikipedia.org:

That makes sense, since Yahoo postings are really just individual emails cataloged within a Yahoogroup, not a threaded discussion such as the new WaccoBB.net.

Yes, but the RSS feed shows all posts. For that matter, the "New Posts" feature on this site shows both new posts AND replies (see https://www.waccobb.net/forums/search.php?do=getnew). It would make sense that the RSS feed offered the same.

In my RSS post to WaccoBB@yahoogroups regarding enabling the feed, one of the replies was from Matt:

I second that request. Whether RSS is added via Yahoo
or via the new website, it would be incredibly useful
to read Wacco postings via a news aggregator or
bloglines.com

Even better: make search results available as RSS
feeds, like at yahoo.com and craigslist.org. I can
help with the programming if necessary -- contact me
at sitefoundry.com.

And is it something that works in Safari?

I'm not a big fan of Safari, especially the older versions. I'd highly recommend downloading Firefox and using that browser instead:

Found this on vBulletin.org - looks like it'll do the job:
https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69834&page=1&pp=15
(https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69834&page=1&pp=15)

A new option has been added named "items" to allow you to specify if the feed should be only of new threads or of any threads that have had recent activity. By default the current version of external.php will only show the last 15 new threads; if somebody replies to an older message then that thread will not be included in the output since the thread creation date is older than the 15 newest threads. Providing a value of "active" to the new "items" option will result in the X number of threads you specify that have either had recent replies or is new thread. In other words, if a thread has any replies then the date of the last reply will be used as part of the selection process but if the thread doesn't have any replies to it yet then the thread creation date will be used as part of the selection process. This was done to allow flexibility in what should be included in the external feed.

The Body Text seems to be included in the RSS 2.0 feed, but not under the RSS 0.91 feed. Please add the Body Text to the RSS 0.91 feed (and set both to unlimited length if possible.) It would be VERY useful to see everything within the original post as part of the RSS item (and only have to load the html site if I need to reply or search further. :-)
