Arizona Rep. Giffords Shot By Gunman (https://www.npr.org/2011/01/08/132764367/congresswoman-shot-in-arizona)

by NPR Staff

January 8, 2011 Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head by a gunman at a public event in Tucson on Saturday. There are conflicting reports about whether she was killed.

The Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office told member station KJZZ the 40-year-old Democrat was killed. At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were injured.

Giffords, who was re-elected to a third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.
The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events, which she holds regularly, allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Giffords is married to astronaut Mark Kelly, a veteran of Desert Storm. They have two children.

Rep. Giffords in 2007
Giffords was first sworn in as a congresswoman on January 3, 2007. She was the third woman in Arizona's history to be elected to serve in the U.S. Congress.

In her inaugural speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, Giffords said a comprehensive immigration reform package needs to include modern technology to secure the border, more border patrol agents, tough employer sanctions for businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, and a guest-worker program.

In her first month in office, Congresswoman Giffords voted to support increased federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryonic_stem-cell_research), raising the minimum wage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage), endorsing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_Commission), and supporting new rules for the House of Representatives targeting ethical issues.

Giffords also voted to repeal subsidies to big oil companies and invest the savings in renewable energy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy). "We put our national security at risk by relying on oil from unstable regimes in the Middle East (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East) and Latin America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_America)," Giffords told her colleagues in a speech on the House floor during debate on the Clean Energy Act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_Energy_Act).
The act repeals $14 billion in subsidies given to oil companies and establishes a Strategic Renewable Energy Reserve (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Strategic_Renewable_Energy_Reserve&action=edit&redlink=1) to increase research in clean renewable energy, to develop greater energy efficiency, and to improve energy conservation.

During the 2007 session of Congress, Giffords introduced a bill (H.R. 1441)[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-0) that forbids the sale of F-14 aircraft parts on the open market.[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-1)

She also voted for the contentious May 2007 Iraq Emergency Supplemental Spending bill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Troop_Readiness,_Veterans%27_Care,_Katrina_Recovery,_and_Iraq_Accountability_Appropriations_Act,_2007), saying, "I cannot, in good conscience, allow the military to run out of money while American servicemen and women are being attacked every day".[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-2)

Giffords is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Dog_Coalition) and the New Democrat Coalition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Democrat_Coalition). She is the only member of the U.S. Congress whose spouse, astronaut Mark E. Kelly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_E._Kelly), is an active duty member of the U.S. military.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-3)

She is also known as a strong proponent of solar energy as well as for her work to secure the border with Mexico.[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-4)[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-5)

On January 8, 2011, Giffords was shot outside a Safeway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safeway) in northwest Tucson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucson) during her first "Congress on Your Corner" gathering of the year. At least nine others were injured when a man ran up to the crowd and began firing.[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords#cite_note-6)

Here's the screenshot of the shooter's page before taken down by MySpace:

https://yfrog.com/f/h2vlzp/

That one photo of a semi-automatic pistol with that photo shot of what appears to be the Lincoln Memorial shows that the alleged assassin probably had some kind of a fixation about the pistol and the federal government.

Also, there was mentioned in the article about him, in one of his YouTube videos making a statement about mind control.

Even though there may be something to it as far as the manipulation by way of mind control goes; that's really no reason or defense for the horrible thing that he (“allegedly”) did.

I'm used to the rhetoric. You can't be expected to self-censor to avoid offending the easily offended, or limit all public expression so it's child-safe or innocuous enough to escape notice by the unstable - but you should at least be honest about it. From the NPR story:

in a Sunday interview with talk radio host Tammy Bruce, Rebecca Mansour, who works for Palin's PAC, said the images of crosshairs weren't intended to evoke violence: "We never ever, ever intended it to be gun sights," she said. really? those are just pushpin icons???
