I am planning an apple orchard and would like to go apple tasting to help me decide which varieties to plant. I will check out the farmers markets but there must be other places I can go. Any info would be appreciated.

The Occidental Arts & Ecology Center is holding a biodiversity tasting at 2 p.m. this Sunday, August 7. The center has lots of different apple trees, so there should be plenty to taste. Admission is sliding scale, $25 to $100 -- send a check to 15290 Coleman Valley Rd., Occidental 95465. You might want to call them (874-1557) to make sure it's not sold out and that they will have apples.

Personally, I think we have a local lack of Pink Lady apples, which are marvelous for eating fresh and cooked. And it would hardly be a West County orchard without Gravensteins.
