New Example: Dutra's Disregard for the Law [Archive]

Dutra’s environmental record includes fines of $735,000 after “more than 200,000 cubic yards of dredged material were discharged outside legally authorized areas - much of that in sanctuary waters…” near the Farallon Islands (https://www.marinij.com/marinnews/ci_4194307?IADID=Search-www.marinij.com-www.marinij.com).

It also includes Dutra’s declaration of bankruptcy when its illegal and environmentally destructive dredging was exposed in Biscayne Bay, Florida, leaving their insurance company to settle with the county for $22.5 million (https://www.saveshollenberger.com/2009/10/dutras-track-record-history-in-miami.html).

Ironically, during the October 12<sup>th</sup> Board of Supervisors hearing where there were arguments that Dutra had changed its ways, a $45 million lawsuit was getting “underway in federal court in Sacramento after a Dutra barge destroyed a houseboat in the Delta, severely injuring the owner. The barge was not supposed to be operating at night, and there was only one tug, a violation of river regulations” (https://www.petaluma360.com/article/20101013/COMMUNITY/101019819).
