Back in the late 80s, I hung out with a cowboy from Elko, Nevada. He was quite a character, but not near as much as his 'Old Timer' father. We'd head up to Elko, hang out getting the 4 wheelers ready for back country travel, and his Pa, sitting next to his home-made basement still would start reciting his own cowboy poetry.

We started swapping poems, and I discovered I had my own knack at writing them. Here's probably my favorite of the 'Old Timers'. Mind you, this guy had a ranch with Basque sheephearders and cowboys riding the range - authentically.

The Shepherd Boy
by the Old Timer, Elko, NV> copywritten

A shepherd boy lay asleep in the grass
His faithful dog, asleep at his ass.
An ewe was sniffing his balls
Through a hole he'd torn in his overalls.

A Magpie sat on limb close by
Watching this scene with a knowing eye.
The shepherd awoke from his slumbering sleep
And proceeded to catch and boink that sheep.

The sheep began to blat, the dog began to bay
And the Magpie?
It just sh*t and flew away.
