You've taken the first step in driving this country away from oil dependency and towards a clean energy future. But last week, the White House lifted the ban on offshore oil drilling that's been in place since BP's disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and we urgently need your help to prevent another devastating oil spill.

Tell Congress and the White House to pass stricter safety standards for oil and gas drilling and seek out and support clean, renewable energy sources. (https://ga3.org/campaign/offshoredrilling_change_fin/ggkg7ekrfjm7wxbb?source=201010_adv_oildrill)

Last week, the White House lifted its 6-month ban on offshore oil drilling, despite the environmental, economic and social devastation wrought by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico this spring and summer.

There is no time to waste – in the Gulf of Mexico, alone, there are 33 deepwater rigs poised to resume drilling!

Urge Congress and the White House to enact stricter safety standards for oil and gas drilling and to seek out and support clean, renewable energy sources (https://ga3.org/campaign/offshoredrilling_change_fin/ggkg7ekrfjm7wxbb?source=201010_adv_oildrill) that do not pose a danger to the planet ASAP.

There is no more convincing example of the dangers that our reliance on dirty, fossil fuels pose than the BP spill.

172 million gallons of oil (and 1.8 million gallons of chemical dispersant) spilled into the Gulf of Mexico, a body of water that was already struggling as a result of smaller oil spills, farm runoff and overfishing. The spill's victims include sea turtles, whales, dolphins, pelicans and other sea birds, shrimp, bluefin tuna and other fish, and the fragile coast itself, not to mention the livelihoods of the area's residents.

Unfortunately, the question is not IF another spill will occur, but WHEN it will happen.

That is why Congress and the White House must be more aggressive in tightening safety regulations for oil and gas drilling and in seeking out and supporting clean, renewable energy sources (https://ga3.org/campaign/offshoredrilling_change_fin/ggkg7ekrfjm7wxbb?source=201010_adv_oildrill) that will neither pose a danger to our fragile ocean ecosystems and our coastal communities, nor contribute to global warming.

But our elected officials are not the only ones on the hook here. We also have a role to play in preventing future tragedies like the BP spill and making our energy future a clean, renewable one.

Will you join me in contacting Congress and the White House today (https://ga3.org/campaign/offshoredrilling_change_fin/ggkg7ekrfjm7wxbb?source=201010_adv_oildrill) in response to the lifting of the offshore drilling moratorium last week?

Then please lend a hand to spread the word (https://ga3.org/campaign/offshoredrilling_change_fin/forward/ggkg7ekrfjm7wxbb?source=201010_adv_oildrill).

Together, we have the power to change course.

Thank you again for your support.

Sincerely,

Mike Town

Why not get a ballot initiative to permanently BAN drilling offshore anywhere along the State of California?? The other alternative is to pass legislature that would bankrupt the oil company if they so much as spill a single drop into our coastal waters.
