AMERICAN PHILARMONIC-SONOMA COUNTY INVITED TO TOUR CHINA

American Philharmonic-Sonoma County has been invited by the government of China and the Dalian Yilan Concert Production Company to tour northern China over this coming New Year’s holiday. Sponsored and supported almost entirely by the Chinese government, the orchestra will perform 8 concerts in 12 days in Shanghai, Beijing, Yantai, and Qindao from December 26, 2010 through January 6, 2011.

American Philharmonic will be performing in the largest, most prestigious venues in these cities, including the 2,000-seat Poly Theater in Beijing and at the Shanghai Arts Center. In the spirit of the New Year and cross-cultural exchange, Music Director Gabriel Sakakeeny will lead the orchestra in performances of American, Chinese, and European music. Sonoma State University piano professor Marilyn Thompson and French violinist Solenn Seguillon will be the featured soloists, performing Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F and Gang/Zhanhao’s The Butterfly Lovers’ Concerto, respectively. Other works will include well-known movie themes by John Williams, Chinese folk songs, and Respighi’s sparkling tone poem, The Pines of Rome.

“This is an incredible opportunity for American Philharmonic.” says Maestro Sakakeeny. “It is such an honor to be invited to perform in the Carnegie halls of China, and we are looking forward to sharing our music and representing our country to the Chinese people. It’s going to be an amazing tour.”

In collaboration with the Chinese government, the Dalian Yilan Concert Production Company will pay for 50% of the international airfare and all in-country expenses for American Philharmonic, including all room, board, and transportation. To raise the funds for the other 50% of the international airfare in addition to supporting its general fund, American Philharmonic will be presenting a series of fundraiser concerts throughout Sonoma County over the next four months.

“These new concerts will represent the best of the best of American Philharmonic,” explains Maestro Sakakeeny. “For the first time, our audiences will get to hear our principal players and honored guests perform a variety of superb, small-ensemble music in intimate venues in our community. American Philharmonic will also present a special, 1-night-only fundraising performance of the same concert we’ll be playing all over China. We get to expand our offering to our audiences and support our mission and the China tour all at once with these concerts.”

Tickets to all fundraiser concerts are $35 each and are available to purchase through www.brownpapertickets.com (https://www.brownpapertickets.com).

The organization’s mission is to make the beauty of music and the power of community alive and available for everyone. Over its 12 years of existence, American Philharmonic has commissioned several world premiers, featured world-class soloists including pianist Stephen Prutsman, bassoonist George Sakakeeny, and violinist Joshua Weilerstein, and has performed an impressive gamut of the symphonic repertoire.
