View Full Version : Does anyone know about tetnus shots??

I just stepped on a nail earlier this eve. called Kaiser, nurse there said I have 72 hours (I imagine after that, I either turn into a raging maniac foaming at the mouth or I am OK??) Actually, I am curious about any "extras" THEY might be putting into shots such as tetnus, as THEY have into the flu vaccine. I would love to hear any feedback or experience you have had - also does anyone know where I can get an inexpensive shot, since I may not have insurance to cover it?

Many thanks ahead of time to anyone who responds!

Karen

Your mileage may vary, but if it were me...

I'd get the shot. Tetanus-only does exist (me and my kids ( to Karen) have gotten them).

You can ask for it and they may or may not have it on hand. You might want to call ahead and see if they can locate some. It generally comes as "DPT", Diptheria, Pertusus (Whooping cough), and Tetanus. In my opinion, unnecessary vaccines (or not worth the risk), pose more risk to infants than adults.

I wouldn't f*ck with it. Given that you stepped on the proverbial "rusty nail", I'd say your odds that you'd turn into a "raging maniac foaming at the mouth" vs. the risk of a serious side effect (allowing for the most likely outcome of no tetatus and no side effect) , is 100 to 1!

As I said, your mileage may vary...

I would and have gotten the tetanus vaccine and though I was one of those horrible people who chose to not vaccinate my child as prescribed. ER has to treat you whether or not you are insured. Do not wait. Are there any signs of infection? May need antibiotics as well.....sorry. Mindy, ex RN

Dear Karen,

Sorry about your injury. I just wanted to say that in my experience, hospital personnel will not bother to tell you what is is in the shot along with the tetanus - because they don't think it is a big deal.

In my son's case it was DT (diptheria and tetanus). I was dismayed by this failure to notify me. I was further dismayed when another hospital worker came in and tried to give my son a second dose, not knowing that the shot had already been given. That was the only vaccine that my son has ever received. He's okay, but he used to get a welt sometimes at the injection site.

I hope your experience is problem-free!
