I would like to open a dialogue with anyone who is using Open Office. Some questions:
Does it function as well as MS Office
Was it easy to install and move MS files into Open Office
Once you have files in Open Office and decide to go back MS can you move the files back with changing all the extensions?
Is it easy to use if you are used to MS office...
Any info would be helpful........thanks:Thanks:

I use Open Office on my notebook when I'm traveling. Microsoft Word files open easily in OO and the program is easy to use. I haven't tried converting back to MO however so don't know this works seamlessly or not.

I could never afford MS Office so have used OO quite a lot. It's not as slick as it seems. Still in Beta version in my opinion.
When you try to save from one format to the other (MS to OO and back again), there is always some loss of formatting. That makes me have to go through documents and reformat. When I try to mail an OO document, most people email back and tell me they can't open it.
I've found a great replacement in google documents. With that, I can use either the document or the spreadsheet files and they translate well into MS documents and back again. It has a wonderful feature of saving in PDF for easy emailing and makes great reports for me from my Excel files.
I still use OO as I've grown accustomed to it's quirks. If I have to share, I usually cut and paste into the body of an email to save the hassles with attaching a document. Or, I can cut and paste into googledocs and make a pdf to send.
I can't kick it because I love to write and make excel documents so I use it constantly. But, don't expect miracles!

Hello to anyone, I use Open Office for docs and spreadsheets. OO loads pretty slowly on my ancient laptop, but so does most anything. You need to save your files in RTF format (among the many format choices you have) if you want others to open them.

Hi: I installed OpenOffice in my netbook (after I purchased it in a "deal" with Verizon, I found that the MS Office 2007 was installed in it only as a "3-month free trial" and that I would have to pay for a new MS Office 2007 system at regular retail. I decided to give Open Office a shot, and downloaded it for free from Sun Microsystems.
I found it to be really slow (but that may be due to some inherent issue with the netbook - an Acer Aspire One D250) -- and it's not very user-friendly for someone who's not terribly computer savvy like myself. I found that I had a LOT of difficult opening MS Word docs in it, or saving anything that I needed to send out TO someone using MS Word on their computer.
It's do-able, but just seems very sticky and balky. I finally finagled another free trial of MS Office 2007, and am saving up to buy it when the offer times out.
I hope this helps you!
