Afternoon My Fellow Wacoons,
As you probably already know, I've volunteered to moderate WaccoTalk and WaccoReader. I read pretty much all of the posts in those categories so it's not hard for me to check them for formatting and conduct issues; such as margins that are too wide, html commands that aren't hidden, fully quoted articles that violate the "Fair Use" limits of the copyright laws, excessive combativeness and violations of civility as defined by the posting guidelines for waccobb.net, and the following issue.
Anyone reading the small print, "Last edited by ...", knows I've been reducing/deleting text in quotes from previous posts in the thread. I suspect that posters do this because when you hit the "Reply Publicly" icon (at the end of each post on the lower right) it automatically includes all the text from the previous post as a quote.
This isn't a big deal on the website, where I read all the waccobb.net traffic that interests me, but in the daily digest it adds extraneous text to that email.
An easy way to avoid quoting everything from the post you're replying to, is to use the "New Reply" icon at the beginning or end of the thread. It's in the upper left hand corner.
I only quote previous posts if it is needed to make sense of what I'm saying. And I try to select only the relevant text, not the whole quote. It would be nice if others were equally solicitous of the patience and good will of those reading their stuff.
Some of you may be concerned about my ability to be neutral while moderating W-Talk and W-Reader. I've moderated much more contentious political lists on yahoogroups.com for years.
As a teacher I have to separate my views from my job as a mediator and neutral guide for scholars. The way I put it is, it's my job to teach them how to think, not what to think.
If anyone feels I've crossed the line and have inserted my personal views into the way I moderate, please speak up. You can say it publicly in the thread in question, you can use the caution sign in the upper right hand corner (with the exclamation point in it) to report it to all waccobb.net moderators, or you can use the reply privately option to send a message to the author of the post.
I can take your criticisms, please don't hesitate expressing any you may have. All I ask is that you try and be kind, while telling me what I've done wrong... (Sic.)
