Sen Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) writes an OpEd on Politico (https://www.politico.com/), in which she calls for building up the military infrastructure within the U.S., instead of doing so overseas. She says it would transfer massive spending by the Dept. Of Defense from countries where it's not needed, back to the U.S. I rarely agree with GOP senators on anything, but I hope Huthison's opinion about foreign bases gains popularity among legislators in general.

In my opinion she misses the point. We already have a huge miilitary bases infrastructure in the U.S. We don't need to build it up more. We just need to reduce the size of our military, and consequently the horrendous amounts of national treasure spent on it, when we so desperately need those funds spent elsewhere.

Although she does miss the point in this piece, it's still an interesting article because it demonstrates the amount of waste the U.S. is transferring to other countries:

Excerpts:

"At the end of the Cold War, the U.S. military determined that our armed forces would be best trained and equipped for service when stationed on U.S. soil. Thus, our military adopted a “force projection” strategy that allows service members to deploy from home, rather than being based primarily overseas."

"However, the DoD’s current military construction proposal would set in motion a worldwide transformation of U.S. basing that would expand our overseas presence. DoD is pursuing expensive, and in some cases duplicative, military construction projects in Europe, South Korea and Guam, without demonstrating adequate cost efficiencies, projected costs or a broader basing strategy."
