A close reading of the new health care legislation, which will conveniently take effect in 2014 after the next presidential election, is deeply depressing. The legislation not only mocks the lofty promises made by President Barack Obama, exposing most as lies, but sadly reconfirms that our nation is hostage to unchecked corporate greed and abuse. The simple truth, that single-payer nonprofit health care for all Americans would dramatically reduce costs and save lives, that the for-profit health care system is the problem and must be destroyed, is censored out of the public debate by a media that relies on these corporations as major advertisers and sponsors, as well as a morally bankrupt Democratic Party that is as bought off by corporations as the Republicans.
The 2,000-page piece of legislation, according to figures compiled by Physicians for a National Health Plan (PNHP), will leave at least 23 million people without insurance, a figure that translates into an estimated 23,000 unnecessary deaths a year among people who cannot afford care. It will permit prices to climb so that many of us will soon be paying close to 10 percent of our annual income to buy commercial health insurance, although this coverage will only pay for about 70 percent of our medical expenses. Those who become seriously ill, lose their incomes and cannot pay skyrocketing premiums will be denied coverage. And at least $447 billion in taxpayer subsidies will now be handed to insurance firms. We will be forced by law to buy their defective products. There is no check in the new legislation to halt rising health care costs. The elderly can be charged three times the rates provided to the young. Companies with predominantly female work forces can be charged higher gender-based rates. The dizzying array of technical loopholes in the bill—written in by armies of insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyists—means that these companies, which profit off human sickness, suffering and death, can continue their grim game of trading away human life for money.
“They named this legislation the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and as the tradition of this nation goes, any words they put into the name of a piece of legislation means the opposite,” said single-payer activist Dr. Margaret Flowers (https://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/02052010/profile3.html) when I heard her and Helen Redmond (https://helenredmond.wordpress.com/)dissect the legislation in Chicago at the Socialism 2010 Conference last month. “It neither protects patients nor leads to affordable care.”

Yeah, and Obama's weather this month sucks too! It should be a lot warmer. But since this cold weather happened during Obama's presidency, it's Obama's weather. That's just the same gross oversimplification as your article when it calls The Health Care Reform Act, "Obama's Health Care Bill". Your article writer comes off as a spoiled little child.

Unless you were sequestered someplace, with zero access to news or the web during the whole messy legislative process that led to the The Health Care Reform Act, you & your article writer should know that Obama got something done, not the bill he wanted, certainly not the single payer bill for which so many of us hoped. But Obama and his administration should be praised highly for getting something, anything done in the face of almost universal congressional obfuscation, foot dragging, petty partisanship, and greedy self interest.

Obama got magnitudes more done on this issue than any politician before him. Give him a break, and give him his due!

it is not uncommon to refer to a bill using the name of the sitting president who signed it. thus - obamacare - as it is most often called, or obama's healthcare bill, since obama is generally considered to be the president.

"my article writer" did not make it up.

i appreciate your take on the matter and i treat your post seriously. i'm okay with disagreement. but you might have been a bit more generous with the options, i.e. either the bill is praised or the non-praiser was sequestered someplace with zero access....

surely there is a place somewhere in between for me and others like me...?

thanks for your thoughts,

G.I.GO = Garbage in, Garbage Out.
IMHO, the New Health Care System is of the rich, for the rich, and by the pre-approved by the Private, for profit, health Care, Insurance lobby, that are politically connected.
Obama signed it into law. It is at least to some extent on him now, whether we like it or not.

Sometimes it is better to do nothing after trying to do something to make improvements when it is obvious that at some point in time it becomes clear that the politics won't work to do the right thing than it is clear that, to do something else actually would make it worse on down the road.
What happened with this health care situation is that it has now become worse because what happened is that it set a precedent which essentially allows and encourages lobbyists paid for by large corporations to out-voice, outspend, and trample on the public at large.
It's as if they have a megaphone to the politicians ears. And yet the general public is somewhere locked out on the other side of the locked doors of Congress.

But I'm not one to say that Obama is the proverbial Boogie Man in this particular instance, because I believe that the Republicans are the naysayers all the way around. But the Democrats are definitely equally as responsible for such a reprehensible health care bill. Note that I said equally, not more so.

Both parties are playing political strategy with the health care.
They are both on the dole of the big pharmaceutical and insurance corporations campaign contributions and behind closed door deals; just like they are with "Big Oil" and large energy producing companies.

So IMHO, both Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate, along with Obama's signature finalizing the bill into law are to blame for the bad.
Therefore by calling it "Obama Care" is omitting the responsibility of every single one of them, even the ones that refused to vote for the bill as it was written because the ones that refused to vote for the bill that was written were not in any way shape or form advocating for universal health care, so therefore whatever they would've done (if anything) would have been just to make draconian (https://www.thefreedictionary.com/draconian) cuts all the way around from what was there in the first place.
I guess if your are an absolute optimist then, what actually happened was better than draconian cuts would've been!
But in the long run, in and of itself; it made a bad situation appear (political window dressing) to be better than the draconian cuts that the Republicans would've otherwise legislated would've been!

What I am sure actually happened behind those closed doors was the pharmaceutical lobbyists said to the majority (in this case the Democrats) we won't spend a lot of money to make you look like shit, if you cut us a deal!... ...then they proceeded to put the changes into the bill that would maintain the big pharmaceutical and health care insurance corporate, political, and financial status-quo.

BTW, the "break" I am giving to Obama is that I am not blaming him personally for the horrible health care bill as it is not totally his fault that people will be required by tax code law to pay private for-profit health care insurance providers, what would otherwise (if done anywhere near correctly) be a tax paid directly to the government for a government-subsidized benefit.
I am not quite so sure what you mean by; "due".

I'm not anti-tax, but I am against perpetual indentured servitude to anybody, but particularly corporations!, which is in essence, what certain conditions in that health care bill creates.
It's not like auto insurance like some people say because you can still "choose" not to own or drive a car; you cannot "choose" not to live <link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CSH%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><!--><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><style> <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> and survive!

I see major trouble down the road for certain parts of the health care bill, particularly the ones that [I]requires everybody to purchase something from a private company.<o:p></o:p>

It is 2454 pages long!

Can you [I]find all the parts in it pertaining to your new responsibility to "maintain" health care insurance and actually also understand exactly what it means?

Could you accurately explain it to somebody else?... ...(Never mind if whoever you try to explain it to understands).

Here's a link to all 2454 pages of it in PDF format.<o:p></o:p> https://www.govtrack.us/data/us/bills.text/111/h/h3200rh.pdf<o:p>

And of course , the 2454 pages may not be the only thing because then you have to choose which health care provider coverage plan you're going to be required to purchase!
That may be more than 2454 pages Of reading to figure out what the so-called best deal for a particular individual or family would be!
