A second question to any MAC gurus in WACCO land:

How can one transfer Microsoft Outlook data (saved e-mails with attachments, e-mail addresses, one's address book, and calendar information) to a new desk-top IMac?

After two attempts (and 7 days), the Apple Store in Santa Rosa finally was able to transfer 95+% of our documents and photos from the Dell to the new Mac. However, they were totally unable to transfer any of our Microsoft Outlook data, and they had no suggestions, other than 'hook up your old computer, replug in your e-mail, and forward any mail you want to transfer to yourself, then plug back into the Mac and download." For addresses, print them and manually re-input into the Mac. For e-mail addresses, no suggestions at all. I was also told by the Apple Store that the O2M software, discussed in the "Switching to the MAC" book, was not effective and would not work.

My question is thus: has anyone done this successfully, and if so, how? Thanks for any assistance.

...

Here's two thoughts for you.

1) Switch to using a IMAP client rather than POP for your email Account Type. It sounds like you are using POP. This is an older system where your email is downloaded from the mail server to your computer. It was made so that after you download it, you could hang-up your (dial-up) connection and process your email locally, before re-connecting to send it to the server.

IMAP provides a local interface to managing your email on your server. Your email stays on the server. It has the added advantage that it immediately reflects changes at your server (say you read and deleted email from your iPhone).

I HIGHLY recommend using IMAP if you have a broadband (DSL/cable) internet connection.

I THINK that is you switch an account from POP to IMAP it will upload the contents of your local mailbox back to your server, but I AM NOT SURE. Outlook does support IMAP.

If not, there may be a tool, or you could create a separate IMAP connection to your server mailbox and copy the messages from your POP mailbox to your IMAP mailbox. Be sure to change the setting in your POP account to not delete messages after downloading. Or better yet, change the password so it no longer connects to your mailbox on the server.

2) There is at least 1 (if not more) utilities that help you migrate from Outlook to a Mac. It may not be free, but its worthwhile.

I highly recommend using Mac's Mail.app or Gmail over the web. Microsoft's dumbed down version of Outlook for the Mac, Entourage, Sucks!

Consider this painful process as a final F*ck You from Mr. Softy (Microsoft). Pay the piper and never look back!

Unless your pretty tech capable, you'll probably want some tech support for doing any of this. You might try Mark Wiley at [email protected].

Computer problems are like car problems -- frustrating and aggravating, especially for cyber/auto idiots like myself. So, for Mac problems, I agree with Barry: get help from Mark Wiley. I'm not a shill for him, but over the past six or seven years, he's always managed to resolve our Mac issues, which are not very frequent (beauty of an Apple!). Local, cool and explains what's going on as he does it.

Might as well bite the bullet and pay for the expertise, especially if you need the computer for working at home.

hi

Belkin makes a USB cable for just this thing:

F4U001 Belkin Switch-to-Mac Cable (https://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=460722)

I've got one, if you need some help with the work and don't want to buy the cable. I've used it a few times . . . and it worked great.
