The Sebastopol City Council officially set the election season into full swing Tuesday night when it adopted a resolution calling for a municipal election to be held in November with the state’s general election.

The resolution was a technicality, but the reality took place earlier Tuesday, when 3rd-term Mayor Sarah Gurney announced that she had filed papers to enter the race.

“I’m encouraged by my wide constituency to run and by my experience,” Gurney said after the meeting. “I’m hoping there will be a contested election.”

The mayor’s seat is one of three up for grabs in the upcoming election, along with councilmember Linda Kelley’s and 12-year council veteran Larry Robinson’s.

Kelley was unwilling to discuss whether she will run in November, while councilmember Robinson has emphatically announced his intention to vacate his post, after a series of terms that saw him as part of the first Green Party city council in the country.

“Absolutely not,” he said, when asked about his intention to run.

Local businessman and 4-term member of the city’s Design Review Board Ron Basso surprised the city when he participated in the Apple Blossom Parade with signs announcing his intention to run.

Basso filed his paperwork in April, and hopes to bring his business experience to the council.

“I feel that I bring a sensible approach and voice of reason, and believe in the greater good,” he said.

The only other citizen to file so far is Colleen Fernald, a regular participant at city council meetings who ran for a council seat in 2008, after an unsuccessful attempt to unseat Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2006.

Fernald wants Sebastopol to “take a lesson from San Francisco” and put together some type of single payer wellness plan to make the city a healthier place to live. She wants community-based, progressive solutions to the problems Sebastopol is facing.

“If Sebastopol can’t be progressive, all hope is lost,” she said.

In order to file, candidates must submit a 200 word Statement of Qualifications and pay a $163 fee to cover the cost of printing election materials. Those who wish to have bi-lingual materials printed will be required to pay $426.

The nomination period opens on July 12.
