Public protests/methyl iodide will be legal in 19 days

Unless significant public out cry occurs before June 29th(the end of a 60-day public comment period)use of methyl-iodide will become legal. This pesticide (used for spraying on strawberrys is a known carcinogen and a suspected neurotoxin. The scientists who penned the report for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation noted it as highly toxic chemical any use for fumigation would result in exposures to a large number of the public and thus would have adverse impact on the public health.

Even if you are carefull and by only organic, the workers that use this, the people that buy non-organic and our ground water will be endangered..if Gov. Schwartzennegger signs this bill we have one more toxin to endanger our healthy lifestyle.

Back in the eighties there was a lot more interest in funding research to find alternative ways of strengthening agricultural crops for the food supply. My friend Gary was a research assistant to Prof. S. E. Lindow who discovered the ice nucleating bacteria in strawberry plants (see link to his paper dated 1983). This was a major breakthrough as frost damage was a huge contributing factor to the success/failure rate of this major food crop in California. Instead of trying to fight big companies like Monsanto and Bayer, why not insist that funding for alternative agricultural methods be appropriated? It doesn't seem like, even with public outcry the big chemical companies (and the congresspeople who can be bribed), or their dirty political dealings can be stopped.
