Sharing a letter I submitted to the Chronicle--
Today, in my mailbox, I received no less than three large mailers urging Yes on Prop. 16. Having already received three or four of these, I'm overwhelmed at the generosity of those folks at PG & E who want to protect my sacred right to vote. <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p>
It's nothing short of astonishing that they're spending $44.2 million of their own bucks (well, from the rate-payers, but that's a technicality) solely to preserve my freedom. And not even claiming credit for it -- I just read "PG & E" in small print at the bottom, so clearly they're shy of praise for their selfless act.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p>
Nor do they mention the 2/3rds voting requirement before any town or county could introduce an un-American concept like "competition" to ruffle their waters. It's hard work to run a monopoly. And given the state of California education, it would be a severely undue burden on voters to be forced to think.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p>
I know that PG&E will be criticized as bleeding-heart do-gooders for saving us from our elected officials. But they'll always hold a special place in my heart, along with the raccoon who raids our garbage.

did you see the public notice (published here, printed in the PD) -- PG&E is planning a wave energy project three miles out in the Pacific (so, international waters, yes?) off the coast near Eureka.
public meetings scheduled in June.
We have no ideas what this will do to the ocean ecosystem, isn't this true?
i think PG&E needs to be partitioned...they are simply way, way too big.

The Sonoma County Water Agency is planning similar pilot projects along the Sonoma Coast (https://www.scwa.ca.gov/schep/).

We can better prevent these disruptive projects if we all make radical efficiency improvements and practice more conservation in our own end use (incl. home retrofits), and fund distributive rooftop solar.
We need to be proactive at a grass-root level to make these large scale investments unprofitable by radically reducing our electricity needs.

Ya gotta read the whole bill. It's a utility scam to prevent municipalities from negotiating for the most affordable power. Even other utilities in California don't support this legislation. This bill is not supported by environmentalists. P. G. & E. has merely tailored the language to give people the impression that it's in their best interests. It is not and will only make it more difficult to acquire affordable power, from other providers.

And you gotta read Conrad's whole post (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccotalk/67830-god-bless-pg-e.html#post114607)! :satire:

Zeno, what do you know about these projects and why would you be against them? BTW, 2Bwacco, 3 miles is within our national waters. They extend to 50 miles.

PS. Both China and Russia have plans to drill 50+ miles off the coast of Florida, or so I've heard. Aaaack!!! Sorry, just read up on this and it's a pack of lies dreamed up by George Will and Mr. Cheney.

Our national waters extend 200 miles off shore, how far our national oil plume will extend is open to debate. State waters are 3 miles off shore. I kinda doubt that China & Russia would violate the 200 mile limit without permits, but we issue them to BP, why not them? We violate the ocean as if it's an endless waste/ocean style land fill. We have islands of garbage floating in both the Pacific and Atlantic. A serious amount of the plankton sized particles in the ocean waters are pieces of plastic. Can you say food chain issues? Ground up on beaches by wave action, and then refloated with the tide. It's just more $ we have to spend to clean up more messes. Both corporations and inconsiderate humans are so willing to deliver these to us, without any thought as to consequences. What's the problem? Status quo.... What do you do? Whatever YOU can. Screw the Quo...
NO ON 16 at the very least!!!! VOTE!

Actually, our "national waters" extend "12 nautical miles." Our "exclusive economic zone" extends 200 miles. The location of the continental shelf comes into play. It gets so complicated it's impossible to separate some nation's "property" from another's. Think of the island nations. Their waters overlap. How about Cuba?
We're going to screw up a lot of water with this underwater gusher, and now this news of a second and larger gusher. We have a lot of work to do.
No on 14, 16, 17. Why do they keep coming up with all these BS propositions? A tepid YES on 15.
