One of the many fascinating aspects of the Johnny Appleseed story is that these apples were being grown mostly with the thought of an independent source of alcohol for the settlers.
I remember when my daughter was studying the historical times around the Monroe Doctrine and early America, the Ciderites were always a loud, a bit unruly, contentious group, good for a laugh during this boring period of grade school study.
Michael Pollan's book The Botany of Desire is a great read for anyone interested in plants put to use by humankind. He talks about Marijuana and apples among others. The descriptions of the original apple tree forests in Kazakhstan are baffling.
