This is a real problem. I attempted suicide about 10 years after returning home from Vietnam. The nightmares and guilt were too much to live with. I thank God that the VA was there for me and gave, and continue to give, me the support that is needed to go on.
Returning Vets need all of the support we can give them. We may not like who they are when they come home. PTSD can make even good people hard to live with. Regardless of that, it is not their fault and we need to welcome them, talk to them and by all means relay any dangerous thoughts that they may pass on to you to family members or close friends.
This problem will be more prevalent as the wars wind down. Family members of Vets should contact the VA BEFORE their loved one comes home and learn what to look for and learn how to react to their reborn family member. War Veterans are reborn because their innocence is gone forever and they will never be who they were before they fought.

Thank you for sharing your story. What a horrific thing to have to live through! I can't even imagine......
I'm glad that you have been provided with support to help you deal with the trauma. And I agree that we should support our veterans in a non-judgmental, compassionate way. The people to blame are the ones who throw away the lives of these young people with hardly a second thought.
