They are a bit smaller than usual, but still a decent size and the pit is not too large and they're good!

Please tell them you saw it a WaccoBB.net!

two days ago i bought medium sized avocados at Fircrest for 47 cents each. They were gggrrrreeeeaaat !

if you have time for slow shopping (brousing style) look throughout the store for their "manager special" markdowns. G&G Market does the same kind of practice (it takes a little time to find them).

Did you know that avocados do not start to ripen until they are OFF the tree? So said a kqed program ..

yes! we bought some last night, they are delicious!

Also bought a "BBQ Chicken Verde Burrito" from the deli... Took it back for a refund, their concept of BBQ Chicken was apparently some sort of smoke flavored processed lunch meat stuff chunked up in huge cubes... absolutely disgusting!

did get a great deal on a few poor boy sandwiches which were looking lonely, they gave them too me for 1/2 price when I asked... I took them all and it was about 8pm. The guys at the card game appreciated them ;)

All in all, I was not happy with my shopping experience there. We have recently vowed off shopping at the corporate stores if we can help it, and are experimenting with our various local alternatives. Last night's adventure definitely moved this option to the bottom of our list.

Well, you had three transactions and one was lousy, so you scrub the whole magilla? We shop there often and the only thing I don't like are the tiny aisles, as I am not a tiny person, but I guess in 1949 they were the cat's whiskers.

Juggledude-- You're going to give up on a family owned grocery store because of one product? (BBQ Chicken Verde Burrito" from the deli)

Their produce is always awesome. I swear the mgr. must taste it before it gets stocked. The regular grocery item prices are generally less than the corp./chain stuff. If three people get into line, they call up another checker.

Buy your regular groceries there for a couple of weeks and then tell us you're dissatisfied.

Len,

I didn't have three transactions, I had an overall experience. I chose to relate three aspects of that experience. That I related two positive and one negative is indicative of an intent on my part to see and speak that which is uplifting and beneficial in and of our community. i.e. if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. An adage which I temper with my desire to save a community member from a repeat of the altogether unpleasant and rude encounter I had with whatever form of shelf safe mystery meat they were trying to pass off as bbq chicken.

We all have our experiences, thanks for sharing yours. I didn't actually notice the size of the aisles, but I guess at 8pm they were pretty sparsely populated, I was able to move my large frame through them unimpeded. Let's hope we don't meet in person in the cookie aisle, we might register on the Richter scale as we collide vying for the last box of ginger snaps which are reduced to a very reasonable $1.45!

Bird Watcher,

No, I'm not giving up on them, I'm "moving them to the bottom of my list" of places I will exercise my expression of opinion by voting with my dollars. I appreciate and applaud the family owned aspect of the establishment, and will certainly shop there before I put my money in Safeway or Lucky's corporate coffers. At the top of my list is Oliver's market, then Pacific market, both, I believe, locally owned family businesses. And, as I mentioned to Len, it was an overall experience to which I allude without going into graphic detail. One aspect of that experience, I spent $74 there last night, and left feeling like I had less than when I shop elsewhere. Granted, a purely subjective and unsubstantiated experience, but my experience nonetheless. Based on my fairly discerning comparative eye for pricing, your statement about their prices being generally less is pretty much complete hogwash. Of course, this could be specific to the items I was shopping for last night, Beverages, hummus, smoked salmon, pickles, cookies, ice cream (and my friends wonder why I have digestive issues...) but I imagine it's a fairly representative sample of what I usually buy, so... I did not browse their produce. I will give it another try, though I was strongly put off by the pervasive smell of mildew or mold at the entrance to the produce aisle, by the pickles.

Most stores will call another checker with more than three folks in line, if they have the staff at the time. Heck, doesn't Lucky even advertise that fact?

Their produce can't be beaten, hands down. I look for holes in all their produce because I think the manager tastes each piece! Never found any holes, just excellent fruits & veggies!

I must say I have been shopping Fircrest Market very regularly for the last 4 years. I have had a generally excellent experience with them. I first shopped there about 10 years ago and was pretty disappointed. They seemed pretty mainstream and not even mediocre in quality and selection.

I lived on the other side of town until 4 years ago and shopped at places like Andy's, the former Fiesta Market (I can't remember who bought them out) and Whole Foods. I was a little concerned about having to move to this side of town and finding a reasonable, locally owned market.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that they have been slowly expanding their selection to a healthier, classier selection of foods while remaining extremely reasonable in price, compared to all the other Sebastopol Markets (including Andy's). I have saved more money buying food for my family than i would have thought possible. Also, the service there is truly delightful and always helpful and generous.

They still tend a little towards the mainstream, many of their clients are old-timers who are attached to some of those things. Over-all, I can find most of what I need there.

The brothers who own the place are friendly, personable and interested in giving great service. I've become pretty loyal to giving them and the farmer's market almost all my shopping dollars.

I would suggest trying any local place more than once or twice before moving it to the bottom of the list. For me, conscious and friendly service and good prices outway the occasional off purchase.

...this reminds me...i need to get over there for more 'cados!

there are other fantastic deals to be had at Fircrest which i'll be purchasing on my next trip!

i steer away from prepared foods like the chicken due to allergy to msg.

as i was entering the meat area one day, the meat manager was hustling to grab up some ground sirloin to mark down since he saw a good customer entering. That customer took two packages, i looked to see what all the fuss was about and bought one too.

The checkout clerks are always smiling and genuinely friendly!

Produce is gorgeous! Pride of display!

I live on Fircrest, so I practically visit Fircrest Market daily. I LOVE them.
I have frequently purchased for very large parties without ever having to go to a second store. They are wonderful about placing orders, too. My husband recently discovered their home made soups and is in love with the artichoke heart soup. And finally, it's sort of like Rome - I see so many friends in the isles - always someone to say hey to.

...i've discovered their "home-made" ceasar salad dressing too!

their sandwiches are very fresh and delicious, just as affordable as "subway's"
