Hi. The options for where to go to the bathroom in Occidental are terrible. Local businesses and the farmer's market are seriously challenged by this predicament. Seems like a public restroom - even if it is porta potties - is necessary. Has anyone looked into this before. I tried looking for a chamber of commerce - but the phone was disconnected. Advice for how to make this happen would be very welcome. Thanks!!

The Farmers market staff asked me, last year, if it would be okay to send people to my restrooms which actually helps generate some business. It hasn't become a burden, so tentatively, I'm okay with Farmers Market patrons to use the facilities at Barley and Hops Tavern again this year, across the street from the outdoor market. This may change if we get swamped, but last year, it wasn't a major problem. I agree that porta-facilities would be a better option, especially if the cost was spread out among the pavilion fees for the market. Meanwhile, feel free to use the pub.

Barley and Hops Tavern. Sounds like a good place to end up at the end of the market. Thanks Sandy

It was very refreshing to find while traveling through New Zealand that every little town had a very nicely kept public restroom, very easy to find, centrally located. Now there's an idea!! Not to mention each little town also had a skate park next to a kids playground - wow, what a concept...Kiwis are very people friendly.

Thanks Sandy!

Also, I've heard some conflicting info regarding the Farmer's Market this year. There is the "new" market down at the community center, which isn't really a Farmer's market. I've heard that the county was threatening to close this due to a lack of use, which is why a market is being held there. I've also heard this will not take the place of the main annual evening Farmer's market. Can anyone clear this up?

Cheers

noah, the occidental bohemian farmers market is grateful for your support of the market, including your generous willingness to let the market's patrons use your restrooms!

the OBFM is scheduled to open the 2010 season on the first friday of june this year, as always (applications are available now: :: Occidental Bohemian Farmers Market :: (https://occidentalfarmersmarket.com/application.html)). it is still the only certified farmers market in town, and is not being replaced by the friday community market at the Y--despite the understandable confusion caused by their choice of a similar name and exact same day and time.

when we first heard from the folks at the community center about their plans to have the market to, yes, increase usage of the facility, they indicated that they planned to hold their weekly fair through the end of may to end when the farmers market opened. it's unclear if that's still their plan, though; there's been talk of them extending their fair to overlap with the farmers market.

Whew - thanks for the info. I look forward to this year's market; a lot of my customers were worried that the new "fair" IS the market, and I'll be happy to report it isn't the case.
