SPLC has ZERO credibility as a human rights organization.

When Israel killed an additional 1400 Gaza civilians during Operation "Cast Lead", during December 2008-January 2009, SPLC was 100% silent. Not a peep on their website about that.

In 2006, when Israel honored the perpetrators of the attack on the King David Hotel in 1948 - an attack committed by Israel which killed 92 people - again, the SPLC was 100% silent.

"To cite just one example of many, in July 2006 a plaque was unveiled in Jerusalem's King David Hotel honoring the men of the Irgun terrorist group who bombed the hotel in 1948, killing 92 people. In response, the British ambassador to Israel issued a statement declaring, "We do not think that it is right for an act of terrorism, which led to the loss of many lives, to be commemorated." Among those attending the ceremony honoring the mass murderers was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. One of the perpetrators of the crime was on hand to provide guided tours.

Irgun's leader, Menachem Begin, would go on to be elected prime minister of Israel, as would his fellow pre-1948 Zionist terrorist leader Yitzhak Shamir. Both men were responsible for the murder of far more innocents than Mughrabi, both men were unrepentant, and both men are honored in myriad ways in Israel today."

Like the ADL, the SPLC is a PR organization for Israel, pretending to be on the watch for human rights. One of the primary groups the ADL criticizes is people who speak out on behalf of the Palestinians, e.g. Cynthia McKinney.

The SPLC seems to have the role of criticizing minor instances of conflict - while overlooking much larger incidents committed by one of America's alleged allies.

SPLC is as SPLC does - it has a cute name - who could be against something called the "Southern Poverty Law Center". But, one of its primary purposes is to deflect attention from Israel's human rights violations.

Yes, the SPLC is critical of conflict - unless it is Israel that is the terrorist organization. Then the SPLC is mute as can be.

Hello Hot,

I almost always agree with you on the messages you post but I have to politely disagree with you here. As you probably already know, I am no defender of crimes committed by the Israeli government. And that is why I post messages to this board regarding Norman Finkelstein:
CLICK ON THIS LINK: Norman G. Finkelstein (https://www.normanfinkelstein.com)

Finkelstein, Amnesty International, and some other entities are the experts on human rights abuses perpetrated by Israel. At the same time, I recognize Israel's right to exist as a territorial nation where it is now and their right to defend themselves without committing acts of terror.

But that is precisely why I cite Finkelstein and others, and NOT the SPLC, when I want to bring to light issues regarding abuses committed by Israel. The SPLC does fantastic work when it comes to the KKK, hate groups in the US, organized and institutionalized racism here, etc. And I will never stop applauding their brave work.

The SPLC is a true warrior, having had their offices fire bombed on more than one occasion by the KKK and not allowing these violent attacks intimdate them while they prosecuted and sent to jail numerous KKK members and other White Supremacists.

I appreciate your opinion but I honestly believe that each social justice organization has its niche and cannot possibly respond to every single criminal act committed all over the world. That's why we have police, FBI, district attorneys, the UN, etc. (And that's not to say that they haven't committed plenty of horrific crimes themselves, because they have!)

There is no single nonprofit organization that has the money, manpower, or other resources and infrastructures to tackle every instance of human rights abuses all over the world. The SPLC is focused on social justice in a particular region of the US; that's why it's called the "Southern Poverty Law Center." And although SPLC reports and has some limited activity in other parts of the US and abroad, they are concentrated primarily on what use to be the old Confederate States of America.

Edward/VO,

I generally agree with your defense of the work of the SPLC. While Hot Compost has a point, the SPLC works against U.S. domestic hate and terror groups.

They started in Dixie and are based there. My limited experience with them, only what I see in the news and I read their "year in hate" compilation a couple of years ago, is that they cover the entire U.S.A. One of their greatest victories in recent years was in Montana. Or was that Idaho. It's the court case that forced the remnant of Aryan Nations to give their property to some of the targets of their violence.
