CHP officers will be looking for drunken drivers at a sobriety checkpoint Friday night in west Santa Rosa.
Friday night's checkpoint will be the second of the week in Sonoma County. Santa Rosa police officers will run one somewhere in the city Wednesday night to coincide with St. Patrick's Day.
On Friday, 10 CHP officers will work the checkpoint at a thoroughfare on the west side of town from about 5:30 p.m. until after midnight. They'll be checking drivers' sobriety and their license status, said CHP Officer Allan Capurro.
“Historically speaking, it's a busy week for us and with the warm weather we're expecting it to be a pretty busy weekend,” Capurro said.
Santa Rosa's Wednesday checkpoint will be from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday.
Police departments don't disclose the exact location of a checkpoint in advance.
Hundreds of drivers typically are stopped in such checkpoints as officers do a quick evaluation on whether the person might be intoxicated. A more thorough test will be given to drivers suspected of being impaired. Licenses also will be checked.
The California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will fund the checkpoints.
