I can only wish I were as smart as those guys 'cause I hardly understand what they're writing about.
The word RELIGION comes from "to tie together, to bind, to RE-ALIGN" which indicates relationships outside one's self. So their notion, below, is a bit tautological, if not redundant!

"religion can play a role in facilitating and stabilizing cooperation between groups.”

As for "pre-existing mental capacities" and cognitive abilities existing in the brain, that is the road to hell via insanity, no? Reminds me of Scotty's response to Captain Kirk, "It's the sensors, Captain". The Scientific View, by way of Britain, does not work unless you 'believe' in epiphenomenology, which means you can only know what is inside your nervous system and not the 'real' world. Matter of fact, there is no 'real' outside you which leads to solipsism. And that is the road to hell. Tried and true.

Thanks Len, good insights.

I am reminded of a little story I heard about heaven and hell.
Hell was a place where everyone sat around a big table of wonderful food, but couldn't feed themselves because their forks were too long and they could only manage to maybe get the food all over them and stab themselves in the process.
Heaven was the exact same scene, everyone sitting around a table of wonderful food and also having the same long forks. The only difference was that everyone figured out how to feed each other!
