View Full Version : Apophis asteroid destroy Earth in 2036?

Will the asteroid, Apophis, destroy Earth in 2036?

What could we do to avoid this asteroid from hitting our planet? I heard that one possibility is to send out ships, harpoon the asteroid, and pull it away from its collision course with us.

I also heard that using missiles to destroy it is potentially dangerous because the smaller pieces will probably penetrate the Earth's atmosphere, creating a destructive shower on our surface.

Anyone know anything else?

Will the asteroid, Apophis, destroy Earth in 2036? Or is this another liberal plot to raise taxes, execute another government takeover, and give future generations of "tea bagger" fascists, libertarians, Republicans, and independents to rally and make everyone's life miserable?

My man,

If we only have (possibly) another 26 years to live, you should start enjoying life and stop wallowing in your intolerance of others. Don't allow everyone whose not a liberal make your life miserable, its the only life you got.

Kindest regards,

If you want, you can look at the orbits of all the Near Earth Objects displayed on the JPL web site. You can see for yourself that Apophis will approach quite close to our planet. What amazes me about you and your ilk, Valley Oak, is that you manage to make a plot out of even the movement of celestial bodies. Perhaps you should consider that in several billion years, our sun will die after first exploding and incinerating Earth. Is this another liberal plot? How will your guns protect you? Maybe Sarah Palin will save you from "that exploding, sunspotty, white-dwarf, red giant thingy." Or maybe you could work on a sense of humor about yourself. Read your posts and learn to laugh at yourself. I know I did.

The solar system is too chaotic to precisely predict the orbits of small asteroids decades in the future. Best to keep an eye on them to better constrain their orbits.

Actually, large lifeforms will be doomed a lot sooner than several billion years. The long term trend is for the Sun to heat up as it ages (not cool down as intuition might suggest), which will begin to cook the bejesus out of the planet in a few hundred million years. As if that were not enough, surface water will be lost in a similar time frame by photo-dissociation and the resultant escape of hydrogen to space, and also by chemical sequestration in the mantle by the process of subduction. Furthermore, virtually all carbon dioxide will eventually be consumed by rock weathering, putting and end to plant life. It is likely that the time of large multicellular organisms on Earth is more than half over. The whole depressing story is laid out in Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee's book "The Life and Death of Planet Earth."

Microbes will survive until the Sun becomes a red giant.

Happy Trails,

Richard

In a few hundred million years, we'll have the technology to settle on other planets, won't we?

As the sun heats up, won't we also have the technology to set up a "sunscreen" or sun deflector of some kind to protect us?

Might we have also developed hydrogen harvesters in the form of space stations that are continually supplying us with this needed gas, the most common in the universe?

Wha?

Mr. Omaha,

You have clearly not read Edward/Valley Oak's oeuvre here if you think he's a liberal hating, conspiracy theorizing, gun toting, follower of Caribou Barbie. In fact he's quite the opposite. Your credibility here has been severely damaged.

Unless of course you were kidding and your post was completely facetious? If so, your joke isn't very subtle, in fact it's what I would term, "ham handed".

Which is it?

Is this some apprentice therapists exercise in "mirroring". The more I draft this reply, the more skeptical I am that you could have been serious. But if you were attempting humor, you need to work on your act.

Your second post, that I recall, on this board was to complain that no women responded to your rather detailed questions about what they seek in relationships with regard to communication, emotional sharing and other basics to relationships. I left it alone at the time, because you were asking women, and I'm not one.

But my immediate reaction to your original post was, these questions are so basic, so obvious, that anyone that doesn't know the answers by now, as an adult, is so far behind the curve that there's little hope for them.

I understand the pedagogic strategy of asking the most obvious questions in order to engender a discussion of basic issues. But this is a board for adults, to engage in adult conversations (in spite of many practices here to the contrary!) and your questions were so pendantic as to be insulting.

That's why I think you didn't get many responses from women. But don't let me speak for them, I can't. I do wonder if my take is in the ball park. (Man, I hate sports metaphors! But it's what came to mind.)

Sisters? Can I get a witness?

P.S. I find myself slightly uncomfortable here defending my friend Edward/Valley Oak's um... reputation? honor? As I am fully cognizant of his (your) tendency to provoke for provocations sake. But on issues of history, reason, truth, political tendencies, we're usually on the same page, or at least in the same book, hence my response above to MFTI Omaha.

(I have modified this post)

I always did enjoy "a little help from my friends" as the Beatles' song goes.

My new avatar is Clarence Darrow, who racked up an impressive number of achievements, both in and out of the courtroom. Although Bertrand Russell will be a future avatar, along with many other historical figures.

Regarding the other stuff, I'll accept responsibility for my pronounced irascible proclivities.

That said, I will venture to guess that along with my knee-jerk reactions, Omaha may have misinterpreted a series of rhetorical questions I posted about Climate Change Denial. I deliberately wrote my questions in a way that could have been interpreted as coming from either camp, or more likely from a denier's point of view. The questions included what the real agenda was of liberals, such as Al Gore, Obama, and company in promoting the 'huge lie' of Climate Change. Was it more taxes? Bigger government? Destroying corporate profits that contribute to Climate Change? Etc.

To set the record straight, I know that Climate Change is a scientifically proven fact. Climate Change denial, however, is another detractor movement from conservatives, just like the Intelligent Design and Creationist crap is.

I put "someguy" on my ignore list a few days ago. There is only so much nonsense that I'm willing to listen to coming from flat-earthers, creationists, climate change deniers, and other crackpots.

This asteroid will hit Earth the same time Social Security runs out of money. Coincidence? I don't think so.

My theory is that the asteroid is the reincarnated spirit of Barry Goldwater (google it, teeners), but that's just me.

Isn't Apophis the name of one of the Goa'ould (sp?) System Lords in SG-1 (https://www.syfy.com/stargate/)? To be seen in regular reruns on the SyFy channel.

Coincidence? I think not!

How's that for a conspiracy theory?

This is what I found in Wikipedia:
Apep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apep)

"In Egyptian mythology, Apep (also spelled Apepi, and Aapep, or Apophis in Greek) was an evil demon, the deification of darkness and chaos (isfet in Egyptian), and thus opponent of light and Ma'at (order/truth), whose existence was believed from the Middle Kingdom onwards. His name is reconstructed by Egyptologists as *ʕAʔpāpī because of written ʕ3pp(y), surviving into later Coptic as Aphōph."

My Fellow Waccabbies,

I've been thinking about the abrupt departure of MFTI John Omaha from this board, while I went to a pricey solo dinner at Mosaic to celebrate my new found freedom from the cares of work and teaching in that sad, boring, ugly place called San Quentin State Prison.

I revisited my post taking him to task for attacking fellow active poster Edward/VO, and I must admit I harshed on him pretty good.

But driving him from the field was the last thing on my mind when I wrote it. I just wanted to point out some glaring inconsistencies in his behavior and give him a chance to explain them. And tell him how much his attack, if it was meant to be serious, was misdirected and how much it had pissed me off.

Do others recall that one of the first responses to him on his "Questions for Women" thread was that he complained about a lack of response only a day after posting his questions? I suppose that is indicative of something about his personality.

I find Edward's response a bit harsh. Too much of "Nanny, nanny, ha, ha, You're a chicken, brrrck, brrrck, brrck!" But if all it took was me telling he was wrong to drive him away, well, that's his choice.

I just want to emphasize that I believe it is the right of anyone who wants to participate, within the bounds set by Barry (bounds with which I agree, and sometimes find too liberal and loosely enforced), to do so.

Nothing I write is intended to drive anyone away. If I think someone should be kicked off the board (banned) I say it directly. As I did in the case of ThePhiant a year or so ago.

But this is the public arena. People will disagree. Some more than others. If one does not want to face that, fine. But it can't be avoided if you attack other posters, especially if you have jumped to conclusions without having fully done the research about the character and opinions of who you're attacking. I really am still interested in the answer to my question as to whether he was serious or kidding. Although the events of this afternoon sort of indicate that he was serious.

There are a number of people on waccobb.net who are on my ignore list. I think I'm up to over ten. Most of them fall into the right wing, conservative, free market will save us all camp. But not exclusively. Some I just think are blithering idiots who have wasted enough of my time because they're utterly incapable of expressing clear thought. I confess to opening some of their posts when they're engaged in a thread that interests me.

And I assume I'm on the ignore list of a good number of people here as well. I would much rather be ignored than be the cause of anyone's departure.

OK, enough for now. I never got around to writing the, "Fish Tank", review I intended to post today. Maybe tomorrow. Great movie about a tough subject by the way.

You know, I am certain that what happened here was that VO's sarcasm was not picked up by John Omaha. That is why he reacted the way he did. To someone who wasn't familiar with VO's POV, for him to react the way he did, was legitimate. I thought you would have picked up his confusion after reading his initial post Mr. Miles. And yes, you were harsh on him. That doesn't mean that harshness doesn't have its place, but next time I wouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly and drive people away with your razor sharp vocabulary. :2cents:

As a pure speculation I would expect that we will continue to make progress in the level of energy that we can control. After this paltry experiment with burning of oil and coal, we may move to fission and then fusion, then starstuff. That means that in a billion years from now, when human extinction has been forgotten and a new race of intelligent reptiles has arisen, they may be able to steer our planet into a larger orbit when the sun finally flares into a red giant. That will last a few million years so it will be well worth redesigning the planet to survive the new profligate sun. My only regret is that I won't be here to see it happen.

Paul Palmer

:kidfight:John Omaha has resigned from WaccoBB.net.

His first mistake was to not have separate personal and business accounts. All commercial posters are welcome to have a separate non-commercial account. Though I must say, I appreciate it when people have enough integrity (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrity) to participate both commercially and non-commercially under the same account, with the understanding/trust that how they represent themselves personally will influence as much or more people positively as negatively. As we all know, you can't please all the people all the time.

I also thought he jumped in too soon on his emotional intimacy thread, which I had high hopes for. But he's new here and it's takes a while to get comfortable with how time flows on a internet site such such as this.

John was fooled by Edward's posing as right-winger at some point, which is quite understandable if that's all he sees.

Allowing for the misunderstanding, it was still rather brazen of him to jump into a discussion with such an attack, even if it's upholding what we commonly hold as the just cause.

I wrote to him privately to read more carefully and to not be so quick to attack. On his own accord he wrote to Edward privately and apologized. I wish I had counseled him to post a retraction, but I did not.

Edward publicly explained what might have confused John, and after John resigned Edward posted a pointed not-wholly accurate message about his participation and resignation that I removed with Edwards acceptance.

While Miles' post about John's post was neither harsh not gentle, it still proved to be too much for John, especially since John's professional skill was also called into question. I can understand his concern.

I'm sorry to see John's participation here run aground so quickly. While he may not be perfect (like the rest of us ) it was quite unfortunate that he fell for some bait (Edward) that he did not understand. I think he could have been a worthy contributor to our community.

To you seasoned participants, please be gentle and kind to our newer members. Please note their join date and their prior posts before responding to anything that seems out of line. Keep in mind that kindness is a value that I hold dear and that we should all strive for (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/waccotalk/53440-waccobb-net-community-values.html).

Edward's posts (some of which I remove, some of which I tolerate and some of which I appreciate), are particularly susceptible to mis-interpretation. This is in addition the limits of this medium, especially with a new-ish member that doesn't know us and whom we don't know.

So please, let's go easy on each other. Please ask questions and provide some explanation before counter attacking. And I'll try to be a bit more pro-active when I notice, or am notified, that something has gone off-track.
