AFTER
“One day one of us will be lost to the other—this has been talked about…” Grace Paley
I remember once
when a good friend of ours
died
and we were all so sad
and consoling one another
I thought
(and maybe said)
“I don’t want to lose you
and you don’t want to lose me
and surviving the loss
of either of us would be so hard.
“How about,
when we know the end is near
for either you or me
we get a little boat
and go out to sea—
too far out to get back
and just let go
of it all?”
“Well, maybe,”
you said--
or not—
evasively.
But then
you just up and died on me
before I had the chance
even to find the boat
much less launch it
and here am I
marooned on this desolate shore
without you.
