I hope this posting is not inappropriate for Wacco.

So far, at least 100,000 Haitians have been killed in the severe earthquake that occurred on Tuesday. Houses and shanties, hospitals and orphanages, schools and crowded supermarkets -- entire neighborhoods were razed. Cries for help can be heard beneath the rubble. Badly injured people (many crying out in pain), as well as bodies, line the streets.

Countries all over the world are mobilizing to send rescue teams, monetary aide, medical personnel, water, food, medicines and painkillers). There is also the challenge of reaching these areas, because roads have been destroyed.

We all watched in horror at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; as Californians, we are no strangers to earthquakes; and as members of a caring West County community, I hope we can find it in our hearts to contribute to this effort.

Contributing ONLINE to the Red Cross is one way to help. Perhaps local businesses, workplaces, restaurants, public libraries, and places of commerce -- such as Whole Foods (regardless the freshness of its deli section) -- could be places for small or large contributions.

I don't have television, but even on-line source make us all aware of how badly help is needed for our Haitian neighbors.

Many thanks.

Inezalea,

Your call for help for the Haitian people is totally appropriate on this board.

May I suggest anyone wanting to help with donations read the following (brief) information from this link (https://www.slate.com/id/2241443/).

Based on my three years working for the American Red Cross, everthing said in that Slate Explainer piece is right on the mark.

There have been longer discussions of these issues on this board in the past, if interested use the search.

An appeal today via the Sonoma County Center for Peace & Justice suggested sending funds to School of the Americas Watch. The website, and their specific page on this disaster is: SOA Watch (https://www.soaw.org/article.php?id=1791).

I too feel for the suffering people of Haiti. Before, but especially since they overthrew slavery and French colonialism, they've gotten a raw deal, which only seems to worsen as the centuries roll on.

I hope this massive shock and destruction can somehow serve as a chance to reboot their society and economy, and that five years down the road their future will be bright.

There was a recent article, in the NYT's magazine (https://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/26/world/asia/26iht-tsunami.html?scp=1&sq=Aceh&st=cse), that talked about how international disaster relief has led to positive historical change in Aceh, Indonesia, although many problems remain intractable and new ones have arisen.

Haitians certainly need something similar, if not a whole lot more.

Here's the text of an email I just received. There will be plenty more like it in the next few days and weeks. But Avaaz is a solid organization and this information looks good to me. In that light, I share it with you.

<META name=Generator content="Microsoft SafeHTML">Dear friends,

Haiti's worst earthquake in 200 years struck yesterday, devastating the capital city, killing thousands and threatening over 3 million people in this desperately poor country.

Haitians are urgently appealing to the world for help -- we’re already in touch with strong local organisations mobilising community-based relief efforts. Let’s send a worldwide wave of donations to the front lines, to save lives now and help people recover and rebuild. Avaaz will work partners to make sure the help reaches those who need it most. Click below to donate:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_haiti (https://secure.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_haiti/?cl=445477038&v=5240)

Based on expert advice from leading humanitarian NGOs who have been working in Haiti for over 30 years, we'll offer donations to trusted local organizations, including:

Honor and Respect for Bel Air, a big community-based network in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, which is also supported by our friends at the respected Brazilian NGO Viva Rio

Coordination Régionale des Organisations de Sud-Est (CROSE), which brings together some of the most active community groups in the South of Haiti where the earthquake struck hardest. These groups include: women's groups, schools networks and local cooperatives
In 2008, Avaaz members donated over $2 million for Burmese monks to respond to the devastating Cyclone Nargis. Our money made an incredible difference there -- because it went directly to local people on the front lines of the aid effort.

Times of painful tragedy can bring out the best in us by bringing people together. Let's join with the people of Haiti to help them rescue their communities from this brutal disaster -- act now at this link:

With hope for Haiti,

Thanks for posting this, Inezaea!

Please post any local relief actions here.

Perhaps the easiest way to help is by text message! Just text "Haiti" to 90999. I have confirmed this on the Red Cross website as well as doing it myself.

https://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/red-cross.jpg (https://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/red-cross.jpg)We’ve just confirmed that the Red Cross (https://www.redcross.org/) has already raised more than $800,000 for Haiti through their $10 text message donation initiative (text “Haiti” to 90999), which is backed by the United States State Department.

Susan Watson, director of marketing and visibility for the Red Cross, tells us that they’re getting reports every half hour with the latest donation numbers, and the current total — as of 4:30 p.m. EST — is greater than $800,000 for text message donations alone. Watson says, “The needs are so tremendous in Haiti, and we are honored that people continue to give to the American Red Cross. Raising this amount of money, $10 at time, is a true testament to the American spirit.”

The Red Cross’s involvement in the relief effort is to be commended. Not only did it immediately set up the simplest donation method possible, but its social media presence (https://twitter.com/redcross) and outreach (https://www.facebook.com/redcross), when combined with the State Department’s involvement (https://blogs.state.gov/index.php/site/entry/disaster_haiti), has turned this into a viral funding initiative, topping Twitter (https://mashable.com/social-media/twitter) trends and inspiring action. The Red Cross is also contributing an initial $1 million (https://newsroom.redcross.org/2010/01/13/earthquake-in-haiti-press-release/) from the International Response Fund.

If you want to help the cause you can text “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross. There’s also this collection (https://mashable.com/2010/01/13/haiti-earthquake-donate-help/) of organizations that are accepting donations online.

Breaking News and Opinion on The Huffington Post (https://www.Huffingtonpost.com) has a list of agencies, including Wyclef Jean's. One can text "Yele" to 501501 and $5 will be donated from your phone bill to his foundation, "Yele Haiti."

At Gaia's Garden, 1899 Mendocino Ave., in Santa Rosa, we have a donation can and have pledged to divide funds between Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam, both of whom are currently active in Haiti.

If anyone has heard from Kendrick Freeman, we would appreciate knowing that he and his family are safe.<link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5COwner%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="country-region"></o:smarttagtype><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if !mso]><object classid="clsid:38481807-CA0E-42D2-BF39-B33AF135CC4D" id=ieooui></object> <style> st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } </style> <![endif]--><style> <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]-->
