I'm unhappy to report that I just paid $385.00 yesterday to get my toilet unclogged. I couldn't be there in person and after the plumber was let in by my daughter, we talked over the phone about the problem. I was told it was a really bad situation and I had to authorize a flat rate of $385.00 before he would do anything. This was KC Plumbing in Sebastopol, and I was told that most of the plumbers in the area are now charging flat rates for this type of job. The actual job only took 15 minutes and he only used a manual snake. Not a big problem after all, but it was a flat rate.... When I called the KC Plumbing office to complain, the office person basically said this is the way they do business. I'm going to call the Better Business Bureau and the Plumbers Association of CA.

I should have followed my instinct which was to call De Voto Plumbing before I authorized, but I felt my own pressure to just get it done. De Voto was too busy when I called them on Monday, and couldn't make it out for a few days. When I did call De Voto Plumbing today, they confirmed that they would never have charged this much, and around six or so plumbing service companies are now doing this type of flat rate charge.

So beware and call around before you agree to this. I feel so stupid.

Drain Patrol comes out and gives an estimate for free. I've used them a few times and been perfectly satisifed with their service.

I've heard others make similar complaints about this particular company.
Depending on the location, and time of day, etc, my first hour charge varies from 60 - 100.
Many problems I help people solve over the phone if possible for free. For example, A clogged toilet, can sometimes be fixed by pouring a 5 gallon bucket of water in as quickly as possible filling the toilet to the brim. Wait an hour or two, if it doesn't subside at all, you have a serious plug. Gentle plunging will frequently clear the situation. I've also found toys wedged into toilets so thoroughly that it took removing the toilet in order to liberate the toy, and other times, days of septic repair was required to enable a toilet to flush properly. You never know what opportunity life will bring to your door.
