I too am upset that I got "suckered" into thinking the shelter dogs were sleeping on cold hard concrete. I spoke this evening with the head of volunteer efforts for Animal Care and Control and he told me there is radiant heating in all the dog kennels. What the shelter DOES need is small dog beds, such as Sherpa Bags, blankets/towels so the small dogs can make "dens" out of the materials. The small dogs are afraid to sleep on the bare floors so the shelter needs bedding for them. They also need King Kong toys (small to med size), tennis balls, peanut butter, and if you can help the cats, they need non clumping litter, cat toys and bleach.
While I am a bit put off by the misinformation, I am happy to tell you the email got our community busy gathering items. I think we need to pay more attention to this local shelter. The staff is working overtime to undo the damage done a few years ago by what I am told was a very inept leader. We, the community, owe it to the animals as well as the staff, to get involved in our local shelters. One person can make a huge difference. Let's all pull together and make that difference.

It is always great when people express concern:heart:...and if this gets people to visit the shelter, get involved, and volunteer...that is worth any inaccurate facts. County Shelters have a difficult mission, and can use any support that they can garner, especially when times are tough. :yinyang: But our Shelter has a new Director after 3 years of transition...she is great, enthusiastic, and very into the mission...any support offered will be welcomed! It is not a bad place...it is a challenging environment...help is welcomed.

Just an update here. I am so thrilled with the responses from emails we sent out. We have an entire truck load of items going to the shelter next week! And--some of our friends are going to COSTCO to buy new Sherpa type beds for the small dogs! There will be peanut butter, new Kong toys, and blankets/towels for so many of the animals. This is the best way to begin the New Year! I thank everyone (Wildflower--thanks so much for waking us up), for getting involved. If each of us does just one simple thing we can make a huge difference.

Barbara, thanks for your post! I also believe we should help the shelters and rescue efforts, when ever and how ever we can.
Many Blessings,
