Here is a puzzle for someone who understands electronics. I have a set of components - radio tuner, amp, and CD player. Two speakers are connected with speaker wire to the amp.

When I have the radio on, one of speakers does not work at all.

BUT when I have the CD player running, I get music from both speakers AND I can hear the radio through the speaker that wasn't working.

what could be causing this weird situation? It is a recent development - everything was working before and nothing has changed that I know of. The amp and tuner are Sony components - pretty old.

it sounds to me like you have a crossed input channel somewhere. If your CD player is working fine, and sound comes out of both speakers, that part should be okay. However the radio sound coming out of the single(?) speaker makes me believe that the switch which controls which component you've selected is either on its way out, or is already shorting out.

I thought it might be something like that. I ordered some new speakers thinking it was the speakers at first, but maybe it's time for a whole new system.... I've had this one for at least 20 years!
