Now that we have enjoyed seeing and celebrating the reunification of Germany, it is high time to usher in the reunification of Ireland.

I couldn't agree more. What do you think it will take for that to happen?

I have no idea. I figured that it was at least worth reflecting upon since it appears to be so obvious. Perhaps the wisdom of how to reunify Ireland can bubble up a bit more if there is a greater number of people willing to talk about it.

One of the things that has most fascinated me about politics in Northern Ireland is the practice of "Power Sharing" or Consociationalism (Consociationalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_sharing)) To the best of my knowledge, few countries, if any other, uses consociationalism on a regular basis.

But I don't know if Power Sharing is enough to bring about Irish reunification. Perhaps after another decade or so of relative peace could help pave the way for the reintegration of Ireland.

Another consideration is that the European Union could, to some extent, make obsolete the hope of bringing Ireland back into one piece. This is because the EU is legally consolidating its member states into a kind of "United States of Europe." At one important level, Northern Ireland is in a very real sense being fused in with the other countries of the EU. Therefore, the Irish reunification is automatically taking place with the Republic of Ireland, albeit in baby steps.

Nonetheless, I think that a referendum in Northern Ireland needs to be conducted every ten years, like clockwork, to know the will of citizens and then act accordingly.

Northern Ireland is another, British residual colony, as is Gibraltar and perhaps other territories.
