Solstice

Today as we descend into the darkest hours of the year it is time to renew our faith in this achingly beautiful world, our mother; the living body of the goddess.

The solstice is a time when we must trust that the light will return. That even though this is the darkest hour no one can hold back the dawn.

Throughout the millennia human beings and all the creatures of the earth prepare to face the time of death, in many lands a white blanket of snow hides the green of life and the flowing waters our frozen. All life seems suspended in time.

Every year we gather to hold a candle to lead the way through the death of the old year, and we hold each other, releasing all the petty problems and past animosities. Stripped to our essence we remember that love is the only tie that binds.

Indigenous people everywhere send down their roots into the great mother and pray for the strength and the wisdom, the courage and the patience to know that the mystery of the cycles of life has never failed us. We gather in our circles singing and spiraling into the core of our souls and into the dark womb of the earth, and we must have faith that all life, all light comes from this sacred darkness.

We who practice this ancient religion have a duty and a responsibility greater than any we have ever faced in our entire lives.

Our faith is being tested. We do not have to believe in something we cannot see. Our faith is in life itself, life that is born of the desire to love and create, to bring our imagination into reality in the matrix of the goddess.

We face, today, what appears to be an awesome enemy, a monstrous greedy, cold machine that every day devours more of our beloved earth.

Wars ravage the lands, our women are in constant danger, our children’s future perilous, our men, caught in the lies of false heroism and glory, fight wars for the greedy, empty ones.

The fundamentalist religious zealots are holding the world in a stranglehold of fear. Seeking to seize all power they declare themselves to be the pure and holy, the good, the way, and the light. They declare all who disagree with them to be evil, dark and sinful damned to hell.

Today remember that the dark and the light are one, they are partners in the dance of life.

Indeed we must hold to the truth that all of us, every human being and every creature, every flower, tree, and bird are one and interdependent.

We must refuse to play into the hands of the hollow men, who in their desperate loneliness and fear of the mystery seek to own her, to rape her, to rob her, to, finally, have it all. And yet, the only way to have it all is to know that we are all inextricably bound to one another, we are, each of us, an essential part of the whole.

Paradise cannot be defined by those whose are excluded.

Even as they condemn us as sinners we must have compassion while witnessing their fruitless pursuit of power. Greed is never fulfilled for it tries to find happiness by stealing from the very source of its existence.

It is the inability to see past the illusion of separation that holds us frozen in the culture of war and violence.

We see it everywhere-the solution for dealing with any perceived enemy is to kill it. kill the cancer, kill the insects, kill the Arabs, kill the terrorists, in other words, kill anything that we are told threatens us or blocks our “manifest destiny”.

Now we are awakening to the reality that the enemy resides always within our own psyche. It is a necessary dynamic of the illusion of separation to allow the other to appear to be outside the self. It is a profound epiphany when we realize that we are divided for love's sake, for the "dance" of union.

This revelation leads us to develop compassion for all beings, realizing them as an extension of the divine as well. For freedom to exist, all possibilities must exist.

We are constantly choosing to love or lose ourselves in reactionary responses to our deepest fears. Now we are developing an ability to witness and not just be reactive to the survival mechanism of fear that demands that we attack what threatens or hurts us.

Religion fails when it is rooted in the fear of life itself. The spirituality we are growing now demands strong individuals that are willing to face and embrace the mystery.

Life is not black and white, right or wrong, there is no one truth that we can always reference. Life is constantly changing and we are developing the skills of staying present and responding authentically to every moment.

Most importantly, we must be vigilant that the dualistic mindset does not insinuate itself into our relationships, turning us against one another.

It is time, as we move into the winter season, and the death throws of the winter of this empire, that we remember that it at the very point of greatest darkness when the sun returns. As the I Ching so clearly states, evil must itself fall at the very moment when it has wholly overcome the good, because it has consumed the very energy to which it owed its duration.

As Robinson Jeffers said," While America settles in the mould of its vulgarity, heavily thickening to empire...I sadly, smiling, remember that the flower fades to make fruit, the fruit rots to make earth...out of the mother; and through the spring exultances, ripeness and decadence and home to mother."

The underlying revolution is in truth a spiritual awakening beyond judgment into compassion for the human condition. We face the choice between good and evil everyday. If we allow fear to diminish our faith in the life force the center cannot hold.

Revolution revolves around the axis of love and we must be as bold as love to survive, and even to rise up to thrive, in this time of the great turning.

Spirituality finds is roots in the power of Love to overcome all odds. What ever your beliefs in the core of your soul resides “absolute trust in the goodness of the earth”.

From the mosquito to the whale, all life calls out to us to come back home.

Peace and Love, Magick
