On several occasions, I've found rats in my compost. Then, someone suggested pouring Cayenne pepper or any hot chili pepper into the compost, especially on the top. It works! No rats since I've started using Cayenne pepper!
It should act as a good deterrent to other critters as well.

Thanks for the idea. I tried it. It really works as a good detergent for the rats as you note. They're MUCH cleaner now. And a bonus---the hot sauce makes them MUCH tastier in tacos, too. And I don't have to add sauce to the dish because they're sort of 'pre-marinated' and the sauce tenderizes as well as flavors them. So far I've only used the red sauce but with everyone going "GREEN" for everything these days, I can't wait to try some green chili sauce too. Yum. I think Orwell mentioned this recipe in "1984"

THANKS! what a brilliant and simple solution, and cayenne is inexpensive
specially if you get a huge box at a restaurant supply!
also chilies are easy to grow, and I always wind up with more than I know what to do with!!
