Is it possible to make your own paint? If anyone has any information regarding "homemade" paint, please post it here in this thread.
Thank you!

There are several ways to make your own paint the simplest is a clay based paint sometimes called an alis. You can use powdered kaolin clay or a nice clayey soil, mix it with wheat paste, very fine sand and natural pigments. Google alis or clay paints and you can probably find a recipe, I will be teaching some classes around town this year. It is easy and completely nontoxic and so much cheaper than the non toxic paint you can buy. I can't give you all the details here but want to encourage people to learn.

There is a very good book, available in the Seb. library, on natural finishes called "Using Natural Finishes", A. Weismann, call #693.6. There are also books in the library on Italian Plasters, Adobe and straw bale building that cover handmade finishes. Also check out the Art techniques section for fresco, egg tempra and other painting recipes. If you can find it 'Formulas For Painters" by R. Massey is a great reference.

Hello Sara,
Thank you so much for posting your enlightening message. My wife and I have been looking for a paint substitute for almost a decade.
When will you start teaching your classes. Both of us will try to attend.
Also, this kind of project helps to teach people to become more independent from a consumer model society by learning to make our own products at home. Which are also healthier, environmentally sound, and almost always a great deal cheaper. And there is less waste and no industrial chemicals.
Thank you again,
Edward

Have you actually made some paint from these recipes? I will check out the references you've given. Do you have any personal preferences on homemade paints?
Thanks!
Edward
