American fiction writer, Lorrie Moore, known mainly for her humorous and poignant short stories, just published her most recent book (2009), "A Gate At the Stairs." Has anyone here on the list read this book yet? I'm thinking about buying it because it has gotten really good reviews.
From what little I've been able to garner, the story is about a young, American woman from a rural background, caught between two worlds (environments) and confronted with a series of issues in her personal life that are direct reflections of the same issues that are confronting American society today, especially after 9/11. The setting of the novel takes place just after the September 11 attack and the protagonist is a twenty-year-old Midwestern woman experiencing her coming of age. This novel takes a critical look at contemporary American problems and characteristics, such as the persistent and undeniable levels of racism today, privilege of Whites, and the loss of America's identity as an immigrant culture, among other fascinating observations. There is, nonetheless, a humorous take on everything.
Thank you,
Edward
