Dear Mr President,
Hello again. I'm here to further help you with your most important decision at hand.
This is what I believe you and I have in common:
Born in 1961.
Lived in Hawaii (for me it was 1967-68, while my dad taught Air Force ROTC at the University).
We both ran for US Senate (I was in the 2006 California Democratic Primary, see www.campaignforpeace.org (https://www.campaignforpeace.com/) for details)
We are parents who want to use our personal and professional life to craft a better world for our kids, and all children, to inherit.
We need a way to pay for affordable health care for all US citizens. (For me, it really is an immediate life or death situation; for you, your needs are well covered.)
We want to keep a strong military well empowered to defend our country.
We want a strong economy for all Americans.
We want to protect our environment, natural resources, and climate security. Here is the safest and fastest path for victory on all those levels:
Prepare and call for a worldwide cease fire, led by the United States, through the United Nations, to begin this winter solstice, December 21st; so that we may proceed to bring our troops home for the holidays; in the safest manner possible.
Let's see how it holds, then reassess; we can always try again with all nations next Sept 21st as Afghanistan tried to do through the UN this last <style type="text/css"> <!-- @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --></style>International Day of Peace.
Why was there no press on this? Why didn't the White House join them in a call for a cease fire during the 2009 official UN Day of Peace?
Please see the following information on how the United Nations' Day of Peace came to be. Please have the military Commanders, House & Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committee members watch with you the video of “Peace One Day” and follow up one, “The Day After Peace”. See www.peaceoneday.org (https://www.peaceoneday.org/) for details.
Let's find a new way to honor our troops and find victory at the same time – just stick to defense, not offensive missions. The results will be evident through less violence by all sides, more federal appropriations left to fund all core services and programs including wellness care, climate and habitat protection, overdue water/wastewater and transportation infrastructure repair; continued support for clean & green tech, and small businesses.
By sticking to military operations only for defense of our country, we will vastly reduce the overall US carbon footprint; consider it a cap and trade-off for our US industries to have the time and resources to adjust to greener ways of operating.
This would be an excellent starting point for the upcoming UN Climate Summit talks in Copenhagen. If we lead in this way, I'm sure other nations will be compelled to follow, and enable us all to slow the rate of climate change much more quickly and efficiently.
Calling for a cease fire is also a wiser way to balance the federal budget instead of continuing to increase our deficits in a way our kids and grandchildren can never pay off.
You know the majority of the public is behind you on this. You, more than most, that their support and votes mean more than any old paradigms and failed policies which aren't worth continuing.
The world has evolved to a place where word of a cease fire can get to nearly every corner. There has never been a more opportune time to try it than now! As a mother, I insist you do it ASAP, so our children will have a future to inherit.
I pray that you will have the wisdom to persuade all those necessary, that at this time, a cease-fire is the strongest defense.
For support, I ask you to contact Rima Nashashibi, Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County, CA. I spoke with her in the last year when she was on the CA Democratic Party Resolutions Committee. As a Muslim herself, she verified with me that the Muslim's will honor a US led cease fire.
I believe we have already lost as much as we can take. I know for certain that we are less safe on our own soil when funding for public safety in our cities, counties, and states is cut; and our National guard has been re-assigned to be the InterNational guard, making us vulnerable to all hazards here.
As someone living in earthquake country – I am very nervous about my region's ability to respond to another major disaster.
Please see the video for “Peace One Day”, listen to your instincts, and lead us to the better world right in front of us.
In the meantime I will help further by initiating the Song for Peace competition, and work with others to find many creative ways to make a cease fire very popular, and enduring.
Get your staff to run the numbers on an EIR of carbon emissions related to all proposed scenarios for all missions in the Middle East.
Here in Sonoma County California, we have the Climate Protection Campaign and many other very smart people, groups, elected officials, and businesses who have demonstrated how Green is good – for social, environmental, and economic success.
Now I ask you to seek the evidence of how a cease fire is Green, and a cease fire is safe and smart for our troops, our country, and all Earth's community members.
To quote Congressman Kucinich; the man many voters know endorsed you at a critical time in Iowa, “strength through peace”. Let's show the world we are strong enough now to do what is right, with a call for an honorable mission led with a cease fire.
With much thanks,
Colleen Fernald

On the section regarding World Peace and International Relations, you will note
profound wording the "Progressive Swarm" was able to insert, to empower the will of the party's sensible majority. With a fabulous team effort, here is what we were able to get included in the final hours:
The new Administration must bring our troops home starting now. To this end
we support the repeal of the 2002 Authorization to Use Military Force in Iraq (PL 107-243): oppose further appropriations, except those necessary for a safe and orderly withdrawal of our troops from Iraq (and Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc.), to begin without delay; and to call for an international conference to implement a cease-fire in Iraq...
Please note that although this comes from the CA Democratic Party, this is a non-partisan issue. It is important for all parties unaffiliated voters, and legislators support ethical use of our armed forces and military spending.
It is imperative for all Cities, Counties, States, parties, politicians and candidates to adopt this platform, for there to be any kind of victory in the Middle East. It's time for the US to lead the peace process, by halting the current strike-first policy, and end this undeclared war of choice.
What can you do to see that your political party, government, candidates, family, and community members, embrace the wisdom of the California Democratic Party platform?
Victory in Peace,

Introduction to Peace One Day
In 1999, preoccupied with questions about the fundamental nature of humanity and the most pressing issues of our time, filmmaker Jeremy Gilley launched Peace One Day and set out to find a starting point for peace. He had a mission: to document his efforts to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date.
Remarkably, two years on, he achieved his primary objective when the 192 member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted 21 September as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace. We call that day Peace Day (https://www.peaceoneday.org/en/about/why-one-day).
https://www.peaceoneday.org/assets/images/REGULAR%20SIZES/Jeremy%20and%20Kofi.jpghttps://www.peaceoneday.org/phpThumb/phpThumb.php?src=/assets/images/WIDE%20IMAGES/JEREMY%20WITH%20DALAI.jpg&w=604&h=240;&zc=TL;&q=95;
The UN International Day of Peace on 21 September every year is not only about creating peace between nations, it’s about non-violence in our homes, communities and schools. Therefore Peace Day is relevant to every human being on the planet.
Now the next major objective is to introduce 3 billion people to Peace Day by 2012. To do it, we need the help of all people regardless of age, race, nationality, religion or gender; people who are willing to stand up for peace.
Mission
Peace One Day looks to engage all sectors of society, including governments, organisations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organisations and individuals in observance of 21 September, through the practical manifestation of non-violence and ceasefire in accordance with UN GA Resolution 55/282, and encourage action on Peace Day that creates a united and sustainable world.
Jeremy Gilley is the founder and chairman of Peace One Day.
Dear Friends
10 years ago this September I founded the film project Peace One Day to document my efforts to create an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date. In 2001, Peace One Day achieved its primary objective. United Nations General Assembly resolution (A/Res/55/282 (https://www.peaceoneday.org/en/information/resolution)) was unanimously adopted by UN member states, formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace, fixed in the global calendar on 21st September.
With the day in place, Peace One Day’s aim now is to institutionalise Peace Day across the world so it becomes self-sustaining - a day of global unity, a day of inter-cultural cooperation. This is our strategy:
Through film
My documentary, The Day After Peace (https://www.peaceoneday.org/en/film/the-day-after-peace), produced in association with the BBC and Passion Pictures, has played at festivals around the world and has so far been licensed for broadcast in over 100 countries. The next film, now in production, will focus on the institutionalisation of Peace Day 21st September and the continuation of life-saving activities on the day itself.
Through education
https://www.peaceoneday.org/assets/images/REGULAR%20SIZES/DRAWING.jpg
We aim to provide Peace One Day education materials to every school on earth. The third edition of the free Peace One Day Citizenship Resource for UK secondary schools and the first ever free Peace One Day U.S.A. Education Resource are now available to instantly view online. Free copies of The Day After Peace School Edition DVD have been delivered to all 6,000 UK secondary schools (with distribution support from DHL), and phase one of our USA roll-out has seen the film provided free to 4,000 schools in North America, with a nationwide delivery planned for 2010. The USA resource has been launched in association with Scholastic and underwritten by Ben & Jerry’s. More information about Peace One Day Education can be found here (https://www.peaceoneday.org/en/education).
Through football
We are working with PUMA on the One Day One Goal football campaign that aims to instigate matches in all 192 member states of the United Nations on 21st September. Last year, there were matches played in 180 countries. This year, we’re aiming for all 192 UN member states and beyond. You can read more about the campaign right here (https://www.peaceoneday.org/en/take-action/football).
Through live events
Our sell-out celebration at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall on 21st September 2008 featured a special screening of The Day After Peace and live performances from Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox, Bryan Adams, John Legend and Lenny Kravitz. The event was hosted by Jude Law, with special appearances by Emilia Fox, David Bentley, Gabby Logan and Martin Bell OBE, as well as video messages from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, HM Queen Rania Al Aboullah of Jordan, David Beckham, The Spice Girls and others. Click here (https://www.peaceoneday.org/en/concerts) for highlights and more information.
Through you
We want to reach 3 billion people with the message of Peace Day by 2012, and we are working with governments, the UN system, non-governmental organisations, schools and corporations to achieve that; but ultimately it is your support that will help make it a reality. As Ahmad Fawzi (now Director of News Media at the UN) said at our launch in 1999, ‘It is the peoples of this world who can create peace.’
Finally, I just want to thank the countless individuals - from governments, the United Nations, humanitarian organisations, corporations and beyond, who have supported Peace One Day to make Peace Day a reality. The willingness of people to support the process is what keeps me going. Now it’s up to you. If we’re going to unite the world on 21 September, then every single one of us will have to become involved in the peace process, and 21 September is the starting point.
So please make your commitment to Peace Day now on our site. By working together there will be Peace One Day. Thank you.

Resolution adopted by the General Assembly
[Without reference to a Main Committee (A/55/L.95 and Add.1)]
55/282 International Day of Peace
The General Assembly
Recalling its resolution 36/67 (https://www.un-documents.net/a36r67.htm) of 30 November 1981, by which it declared that the third Tuesday of September, the opening day of the regular sessions of the General Assembly, shall be officially proclaimed and observed as International Day of Peace and shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples,
Recalling also its other relevant resolutions, including resolution 55/14 of 3 November 2000,
Reaffirming the contribution that the observance and celebration of the International Day of Peace makes in strengthening the ideals of peace and alleviating tensions and causes of conflict,
Considering the unique opportunity it offers for a cessation of violence and conflict throughout the world, and the related importance of achieving the broadest possible awareness and observance of the International Day of Peace among the global community,
Desiring to draw attention to the objectives of the International Day of Peace, and therefore to fix a date for its observance each year that is separate from the opening day of the regular sessions of the General Assembly,
1. Decides that, with effect from the fifty-seventh session of the General Assembly, the International Day of Peace shall be observed on 21 September each year, with this date to be brought to the attention of all people for the celebration and observance of peace;
2. Declares that the International Day of Peace shall henceforth be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day;
3. Invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate, in an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of the global ceasefire.
