triplepundit.comSigg CEO Steve Wasik admitted last week that until August 2008, the lining in their popular water bottles did contain trace amounts of bisphenol A (BPA), and despite claims that rigorous testing in Switzerland and the US observed no leaching of any kind, distributors and consumers of Sigg products remain outraged. Outdoor retailer, Patagonia has dropped their co-branding contracts with Sigg and plans to no longer sell any of their products and consumers everywhere are asking retailers for returns and exchanges. While an actual recall of the old products is not in effect, local retailers of Sigg brands like REI, New Seasons and Whole Foods are offering exchange programs. Even Sigg itself is offering a short-term exchange program.

The debacle stems from the copper-like type of lining used in 2008 and older bottles. Sigg claims that the new, cream-colored “EcoCare” lining used since August 2008 is 100% BPA and Phthalate free, but many are still skeptical and switching entirely from Sigg products to its lead competitor, Klean Kanteen, who has maintained 100% stainless steel manufacturing with no liner. If you own a Sigg bottle, it is very simple to determine which liner you have. Simply visit Sigg’s website here (https://mysigg.com/liner/) to compare the old and new liners.

If you have a Sigg you wish to return, REI is accepting returns and exchanges on older model bottles purchased from them, but you must still have a receipt, or be a member where they can look up the actual transaction. New Seasons is a little more lenient, not requiring a receipt, and while they will not give money back, they are offering exchanges and in-store credit on even newer Sigg bottles, based on the MSRP of the product you purchased. Whole Foods is offering a similar exchange program for in-store credit. Even Sigg itself is offering an exchange for the old bottles. The only catch is that you have to pay for postage to mail it back and after they receive it, will contact you for your new product. Also, the offer is only good through October 31.

For more information about the Sigg exchange program, please visit your local Sigg retailer or to return them directly to Sigg, visit their bulletin on the issue here (https://mysigg.com/bulletin/exchange_program.html).
