Hi, Wacco Peeps:

I am looking for fresh local fruit (veggies welcome, too) from our sweet abundant harvest to donate to two local non-profits: The Kid Street School and Adult Services of Sonoma County Mental Health at 3333 Chanate, both in Santa Rosa.

Kid Street is a local K-6 charter school that serves children living in very high-risk situations---so, lots of homeless (living in the shelters) and group home kids; lots of kids referred through CPS and family and drug courts, etc. Many more children and families than usual in Sonoma County are hungry this year because of the economy, and even the food pantries are struggling to keep their shelves full.

Adult Services staff have started a Tuesday Food Club because so many of their clients cannot make it through each week without hunger.

So, if you are a local orchard person, and have extra fruit from your beautiful harvest, please email me and I will help you make the connection to donate it to these vulnerable neighbors of ours. I thank all who read this for being heads up for local hunger this season, in all the creative ways those of us with resources can. Thank you, most excellent West County-ites.

Well Wishes to All,
Artgrrrl

I have a small garden but do have extra food from time-to-time.
Are these places accepting donations of non-perishable food as well? I would like to help where I can. Please send me the info or call me at 415 302 2929.
Thanks for doing this!

There is also a local gleaning project underway through Slow Food Russian River. Aletha Soule is spearheading it. In addition, Frutas Gratis is a program that will be up perishable foods and give them to the community in a unique way. I do not have the current contact information for Frutas Gratis but perhaps someone who reads this thread will post it. You can reach Slow food through the web site, www.slowfoodrr.org
