Hello Community,

Hoping someone can answer this question:

At the middle of spring, we began feeding the finches that seem to love this area. We especially loved to see the brightly colored yellow and black finches. There has been a steady supply of food and water out since we began feeding them, lots of joy in watching their antics, many varities of finches around ... but the pretty yellow and black guys just seem to have disappeared. Is it just that time of year? Are the other birds chasing them away? Or ... ?

PS: the blue jays try to come ... we let them drink, and sometimes will put some sunflower heads or bread out at the other side of our 2 acres but they know they are not welcome up near the finch and hummingbird feeders. So I don't think it's the big birds. Well, any information is appreciated.

The goldfinches you are seeing are definitely seasonal. No worries. I have observed their comings and goings for many years now. They range all over the West. I have seen them in the Sierra in late summer. Since they feed on food other than what most birds seek (they LOVE the small black nyjer seed), they are usually not impacted by the larger birds, esp. the scavenger scrub jays and crows. Aren't they beautiful?

Goldfinches are very fond of thistle seeds; this time of year, they are abundant, so the finches probably are finding plenty of food in the wild. They are beautiful and sweet-singing, aren't they?

We still have the beautiful yellow and black finches a plenty. We have more than eight still coming to the finch feeder, which they eat clean every two days or so. I'm not sure what the migratory pattern is, but now I'm curious.

They are American Goldfinch with maybe a few lesser goldfinch (darker less colorful) mixed in. They are here all year round. At this season the males lose their bright breeding colors and the flocks are full of birds of the year which, like the females, are duller. They flock up and feed together now. Yours have just moved on. Charlie
